Level Designer (4-Month Contract)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Level Designer based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to create immersive gameplay experiences by designing compelling environments, encounters, and exploration spaces for a cooperative horror game.
You will shape how players discover, interact with, and experience game worlds through thoughtful level design, pacing, and storytelling.
Working alongside multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to the development of atmospheric spaces that encourage teamwork, tension, and memorable moments.
The position involves owning levels from concept through implementation, iteration, testing, and final polish.
You will collaborate closely with design, art, narrative, audio, and engineering teams to bring creative visions to life.
This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled designer who enjoys crafting player-driven experiences and pushing the boundaries of interactive storytelling.

Accountabilities:
  • Design and build engaging levels from initial concepts through final implementation, including layouts, exploration paths, encounters, traversal, pacing, and environmental storytelling.
  • Create immersive gameplay spaces that support cooperative experiences, player discovery, teamwork, and emotional engagement.
  • Collaborate with systems designers, narrative teams, artists, engineers, audio specialists, and production teams to deliver cohesive gameplay experiences.
  • Integrate story elements, objectives, scripted moments, puzzles, gameplay events, and environmental interactions into levels.
  • Use level editing tools, scripting systems, and gameplay logic to implement and maintain interactive environments directly within the game engine.
  • Test, debug, and iterate on content to improve navigation, pacing, player guidance, progression, readability, and cooperative gameplay experiences.
  • Analyze feedback and refine layouts, encounters, and exploration elements to enhance immersion, tension, and overall player satisfaction.
  • Communicate development risks, dependencies, and progress updates while working within production schedules and creative constraints.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of gameplay systems and how they influence level design, replayability, and player problem-solving opportunities.
Requirements:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in game development with a strong focus on level design, particularly within exploration, action, horror, or cooperative game environments.
  • Experience contributing to at least one shipped game title, with knowledge of the complete development lifecycle from implementation to final polish.
  • Strong understanding of level design principles, including player guidance, pacing, environmental storytelling, exploration, and emotional impact.
  • Experience working with level editors, scripting tools, and gameplay systems to create and troubleshoot interactive spaces.
  • Ability to work independently while managing priorities, incorporating feedback, and solving production challenges in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across design, art, engineering, narrative, and audio teams.
  • Passion for creating immersive experiences and a strong interest in horror games, cooperative gameplay, and exploration-focused design.
  • Experience designing atmospheric environments using pacing, lighting, sound, and storytelling elements is considered an asset.
  • Appreciation for emergent gameplay, player agency, cinematic presentation, and systems-driven experiences.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to polish, clarity, and creating memorable player experiences.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote-first work environment with flexible work arrangements.
  • Opportunity to contribute to an innovative cooperative horror game project.
  • 4-month full-time contract opportunity.
  • Chance to collaborate with experienced professionals across multiple areas of game development.
  • Creative environment focused on developing high-quality interactive experiences.
  • Opportunity to expand skills while working on challenging and impactful game content.
  • Ability to work from anywhere within Canada, provided candidates are legally eligible to work in the country.
