Job Description Overview
MECHANICAL DESIGNER
The Mechanical Designer supports Mechanical Engineers in the development and execution of engineering projects by preparing general arrangement drawings and detailed fabrication drawings. This role is responsible for producing accurate and complete engineering documentation to support manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly operations. The Mechanical Designer also prepares material layouts and nesting programs for laser cutting equipment to maximize material utilization and manufacturing efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Assist Mechanical Engineers with the design and modeling of skids, buildings, enclosures, platforms, and related assemblies.
· Complete orthographic internal and external projections from general arrangement plan views.
· Design base skids from general arrangement plans.
· Design NEMA 3R enclosures from elevation views.
· Model skid and enclosure assemblies for engineering calculations, civil engineering review, and approval authority submissions.
· Develop detailed fabrication drawings, shop drawings, and assembly drawings for manufacturing and installation.
· Produce skid fabrication drawings for sawing, coping, fitting, tacking, and welding operations.
· Produce enclosure fabrication drawings for cutting, bending, forming, and assembly operations.
· Generate nesting layouts and laser cutting programs to optimize material utilization and production efficiency.
· Prepare and revise engineering documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs), assembly drawings, fabrication details, and supporting design records.
· Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, and quality personnel to ensure designs meet project requirements, specifications, and company standards.
· Support design revisions and engineering change requests throughout the project lifecycle.
· Review drawings and documentation for accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements prior to release.
· Maintain drawing files and engineering records in accordance with company procedures.
Required Skills and Abilities
Required Qualifications
· Proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Advance Steel, or similar design platforms.
· Experience creating detailed fabrication drawings, shop drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
· Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
· Knowledge of structural steel fabrication, sheet metal design, and manufacturing processes.
· Understanding of engineering principles, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and industry drafting standards.
· Ability to interpret engineering specifications, codes, standards, and technical requirements.
· Experience with nesting software, CNC programming, and laser cutting processes.
· Experience in design engineering within a manufacturing environment.
Technical Competencies
· Ability to develop accurate fabrication and assembly drawings from engineering designs and general arrangement layouts.
· Working knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication practices to support efficient production and assembly.
· Ability to review drawings for completeness, accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with project requirements.
· Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
Education and Experience
· Associate's degree in Mechanical Design, Drafting Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
