Evidence and Property Technician


Department:

The Coronado Police Department provides outstanding law enforcement services to the community of Coronado. Under general supervision, to perform a variety of technical duties in the collection, identification and preservation of Police Department property and evidence; to maintain accurate documentation of property and evidence records; to collect and examine evidence from crime scenes; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility, including basic computer forensics and assist in the Records Division as required.

  1. The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
  2. Receive, record, classify and store various types of evidence property; ensure security of evidence and property; transport property and evidence to forensic examination labs; prepare evidence and provide testimony in court.
  3. Examine and preserve evidence at crime scenes for latent impressions and other physical evidence; photograph crime scene evidence, criminal autopsy and fingerprints.
  4. Dust and lift latent prints and fingerprints, including the preparation and entry of fingerprints with the California Identification System (CAL-ID) and Automated Fingerprint Identification System/LiveScan and other related systems.
  5. Prepares reports, evidence lists and property tags for collected property and evidence; Maintain and operate a computerized inventory system; input data and update property and evidence files; check out and release evidence to appropriate persons; update and maintain the tracking system to reflect chain of custody for each item.
  6. Assist in the conduct of periodic audits of the Property and Evidence function to ensure accuracy.
  7. Dispose of or release of property at the conclusion of court action; notify owners; respond to requests and inquiries concerning release of property; ensure compliance with department policies and procedures.
  8. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public and law enforcement staff regarding evidence and property retention, release guidelines and lab practices.
  9. Deal courteously and efficiently with the public in an office of field environment.
  10. Maintain a computer inventory of all Department property.
  11. Participate in training programs.
  12. Perform routine administrative staff work as assigned.
  13. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • At least two (2) years of increasingly responsible property and collection and preservation experience.

Education/Training:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training in crime scene investigation, property and evidence collection or a related field is desirable.

License Required:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.

Examination & Selection Process:

Application Review Phase:

A completed City of Coronado employment application and resume must be received by the Human Resources Division by 11:59 PM PST on February 19, 2026. Copies of licenses and/or certificates must be attached to the application. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience.

Examination Phase:

Application who meets minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview (pass/fail).

Department Interviews:

Top candidates will be selected based on feedback from the panel for final interviews with the Chief of Police and Police Captain.

Candidate Selection Process:

Top candidates will be required to submit a Personal History Statement (PHS) and other required forms for review. Candidate will be subject to successful completion of a polygraph examination and a thorough law enforcement background check conducted by a licensed background investigator prior to the final interview.

Final Interview:

The selected candidate will be invited to a final interview with the Chief of Police and if successful, will be issued a conditional offer subject to the successful completion of a psychological examination and a medical exam, including a drug screening.

Additional Information:

All candidates who successfully obtain a 70% or above in each phase of the exam process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six months. The City of Coronado participates in E-Verify, all new employees are required to submit verification of legal right to work in the United States. WHAT CORONADO HAS TO OFFER:
  • A rich benefits package contributes to the total compensation value. Benefits include voluntary retirement savings/deferred compensation, tuition reimbursement, group term life, short-term and long-term disability coverage, an employee assistance program, and more.
  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for Classic CalPERS hired prior to January 1, 2013, is Members is 3% at 60. The current employee contribution rate is 9.5%.
  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for PEPRA CalPERS Members, hired after January 1, 2013, is 2% at 62. The current employee contribution rate is 7.50%.
  • As part of ensuring our employees maintain a work/life balance, employees earn 144 hours of Annual Leave per year for the first 5 years. After 5 years, the accrual rate increases.
  • The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in an amount equal to a one-time annual salary or $50,000, whichever is greater, at no cost to the employee.
  • The City provides short- and long-term disability insurance equal to 66 2/3% of income. Employees that earn over the maximum benefit of $5,000/month available under the long-term disability plan, have the option to purchase enhanced long-term disability insurance.
  • The City provides up to $2,000 per fiscal year for reimbursement of directly related costs of tuition, school fees, books, and required materials for approved courses and professional development opportunities. Student Loan Repayment can be used under this benefit.
  • Longevity Pay; bonus at 10 years and every 5 years after.
  • Lateral Vacation Service Credit, effective January 1, 2023, employees shall be given credit for prior verifiable public service employment for annual leave accrual rates.
