About Us

The Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital (NIVES) has proudly served the Fort Wayne area since 2004, offering the highest level of specialized and emergency animal care. Our roots date back to 1967, when this AAHA-accredited location began as a general veterinary practice. Over the past 20 years, we’ve grown into one of Indiana’s largest small animal emergency and specialty hospitals.

Our hospital provides advanced services in cardiology, internal medicine, surgery, and emergency and critical care. In 2015, NIVES became the only veterinary hospital in Indiana certified as a Level II Critical Care Facility, recognized for our ability to care for even the most life-threatening cases.
We’re proud to combine state-of-the-art technology—including CT, ultrasound, ECG, and digital X-ray—with a compassionate, team-driven approach to patient care.

About the Role

We are seeking a caring and dependable Kennel Technician to join our 24-hour hospital team. This role is essential to maintaining the comfort, cleanliness, and safety of pets staying overnight for medical treatment or boarding.

If you love animals, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and find satisfaction in making sure pets are cared for and comfortable—even in the middle of the night—this position may be perfect for you.

Key Responsibilities

Animal Care

  • Provide food, water, and medications to hospitalized and boarding animals as directed by the veterinary team.

  • Observe and record animal behavior and health, reporting any changes immediately.

  • Comfort, walk, and groom animals as needed, ensuring a positive environment for all pets.

Facility Sanitation & Organization

  • Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and shared spaces to maintain a sanitary environment.

  • Launder bedding, towels, and blankets; keep supplies stocked and organized.

  • Safely handle and dispose of animal waste and maintain odor control.

Team & Hospital Support

  • Assist veterinary technicians and doctors with animal handling during treatments or procedures when needed.

  • Communicate effectively with teammates to ensure smooth overnight operations.

  • Support client interactions during after-hours drop-offs and pick-ups.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Experience in animal care, pet boarding, kennel, or shelter environment preferred.

  • Compassion for animals of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments.

  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and able to follow veterinary instructions precisely.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

  • Ability to work overnight, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (with assistance for heavier loads).

  • Comfort with standing, walking, kneeling, and bending for extended periods.

  • Work environment includes animals, cleaning products, and moderate noise.

Why Join NIVES?

At NIVES, every team member plays an important role in helping pets heal and families find hope. As part of our collaborative, compassionate, and skilled hospital team, you’ll be supported by coworkers who share your love for animals and your commitment to quality care.

If you’re ready to make a difference—and don’t mind keeping watch while others sleep—we’d love to have you on our team.
