Job Description
The Mental Health Technician (MHT) II provides direct patient care and support to individuals receiving psychiatric treatment in an inpatient hospital setting. The MHT II is an integral member of the treatment team, functioning as the primary conduit between patient and staff, working to ensure the implementation and integration of the patient-centered treatment plan.
Under the immediate supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the MHT II is responsible for monitoring, observing, and reporting patient activities while providing structure, ensuring safety and support of the patient-centered treatment plan.

- High School diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Must be a licensed QMA, EMT, or Paramedic
- Previous experience in mental health, healthcare, or human services is preferred
- An ability to learn quickly, multi-task, and utilize effective communication skills, including both telephone and in-person.
- Positive demeanor and clear understanding of professional boundaries with patients
- Ability to follow directives explicitly, adhere to facility policies, provide patient-driven customer service, and exercise time management skills.
- Completion of CPR and HWC within first week of orientation.
- Schedule flexibility, holiday, and weekend rotation are REQUIRED.
- Must hold a valid driver's license with reliable transportation.
Patient Support & Treatment Engagement
- Encourage patients to attend groups and participate in treatment programs.
- Monitor and assist patients when they are not participating in treatment programs.
- Assist patients with telephone use according to facility policy.
- Accompany patients during smoke and outdoor breaks.
- Assist nursing staff during medication pass times.
- Report patient concerns to appropriate leadership and ensure appropriate follow-up.
Patient Safety & Monitoring
- Monitor patient compliance with hospital rules and policies.
- Monitor patients according to ordered observation levels, including 1:1, Q5, Q15, and line-of-sight precautions.
- Perform patient room searches and surveillance rounds in a timely manner.
- Activate the Emergency Management Plan when conditions require.
- Report unsafe conditions to leadership.
Admissions, Discharges & Patient Belongings
- Perform patient intake procedures, including screenings and body searches.
- Perform discharge duties, including gathering and accounting for patient belongings.
- Accurately complete discharge checklists and forms as directed.
- Document patient belongings inventories in the EMR.
Documentation & Communication
- Audit MHT shift notes for completion and accuracy.
- Complete accurate and timely shift notes and safety-round documentation in the EMR.
- Communicate patient concerns and relevant observations to appropriate members of the treatment team and leadership.
Compliance, Infection Control & Workplace Safety
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient confidentiality.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements and employee illness/injury procedures.
- Follow workplace injury procedures.
- Ensure compliance with patient care quality standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Perform appropriate hand hygiene throughout the shift.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.
Quality Improvement & Performance
- Identify opportunities for performance improvement and participate in ongoing Performance Improvement (PI) activities.
- Support initiatives designed to improve patient care, safety, and overall quality of services.
