Pharmacy Technician – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will participate in the medication reconciliation process.

A typical day for a Pharmacy Technician may include:

• Accessing the electronic medical record to view patients in the Emergency Department that will be admitted, prioritizing those who need reconciliation.
• Interviewing the patient and/or family member to obtain an accurate, comprehensive medication history.
• Reviewing external medication history, contacting the patients’ retail pharmacy, or calling other physicians with the purpose of resolving any medication concerns.
• Updating and comparing the patient’s home medication list in the electronic medical record for the provider to reconcile.
• Communicating effectively with patients and their families as well as working with the pharmacist when patients are currently on medications that are non-formulary.
• Making efforts to assist the pharmacist in converting the patient to a formulary equivalent when possible.
• Performing technical, clerical, and manipulative tasks involved in dispensing, preparing, and distributing all medications and pharmaceutical products for all patient age groups, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and neonatal populations.
• Conforming all work and performance to written established hospital policies and procedures.

To be considered for this Pharmacy Technician opportunity:

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• One or more years of Pharmacy Experience
• PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification required within one year from date of hire.
• Preferred, not required:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • PTCB certification upon hire
