This role offers the opportunity to contribute to profitable growth within a specialized workers’ compensation insurance environment.
You will manage new business and renewal risks while developing a strong portfolio across a designated geographic territory.
The position combines technical underwriting expertise with relationship management and business development.
You will work closely with independent agencies to understand their needs, evaluate risks, and build lasting partnerships.
Success in this role depends on sound risk selection, commercial judgment, strong communication, and disciplined portfolio management.
As a home-based professional with significant travel, you will have the autonomy to manage your territory while staying closely connected to internal and external partners.
The role is well suited to a self-motivated insurance professional who enjoys high-hazard workers’ compensation and a relationship-driven underwriting approach.
- Underwrite new business and renewal accounts within the assigned geographic territory, applying sound risk selection and underwriting judgment.
- Manage an assigned book of business and work toward profitability, loss ratio, renewal retention, rate change, and in-force premium objectives.
- Develop, strengthen, and maintain productive relationships with independent agencies across the territory.
- Analyze account information, document underwriting decisions thoroughly, and make recommendations within established authority levels.
- Collaborate with Business Development teams to support growth strategies, agency development, point-of-sale presentations, and responsive customer service.
- Communicate underwriting appetite clearly to agency partners while monitoring hit ratios, new business volume, production targets, and overall profitability.
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting principles, techniques, processes, and risk appetite based on market and portfolio insights.
- Ensure compliance with applicable insurance filings, regulatory requirements, and internal underwriting standards.
- Use internal systems and reporting tools to monitor book performance and ensure production objectives are achieved throughout the policy term.
- Develop a detailed understanding of agency needs, personnel, target markets, contracted insurers, and business opportunities, maintaining accurate records of agency interactions.
- Conduct agency evaluations and partner with Business Development to establish and achieve agency-specific goals.
- Travel extensively throughout the assigned territory, including agency visits and other business meetings, with travel potentially reaching 50% of the time.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience in workers’ compensation underwriting, preferably with exposure to higher-hazard industries such as construction and heavy manufacturing.
- Experience working with independent insurance agents or in an agency-focused marketing environment is preferred.
- CPCU, CIC, or AU designation is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, negotiation, and decision-making skills, with the ability to evaluate complex risks and make commercially sound recommendations.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build credibility and communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, results-oriented, and comfortable working independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
- Strong relationship-management and customer-service capabilities, with the ability to become a trusted business partner to agency stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, adapt to changing requirements, and remain composed in high-pressure situations.
- Strong organizational and managerial skills, including the ability to work effectively with people across different personalities, communication styles, and professional backgrounds.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the assigned territory, including over-the-road travel of up to 50% of the time.
- Sponsorship is not offered for this role.
- Work-from-home position with autonomy to manage an assigned territory.
- Opportunity to work in a specialized, high-hazard workers’ compensation underwriting environment.
- Significant relationship-building and business development exposure with independent agency partners.
- Opportunity to contribute directly to portfolio profitability, business growth, and underwriting strategy.
- Professional development opportunities, including potential value from CPCU, CIC, or AU credentials.
- Compensation determined based on factors including role scope and complexity, location, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, and other employment conditions.
- Significant travel opportunities and direct engagement with agencies across the assigned territory.
