Role Purpose
The Quality Control Inspector – Level 2 is responsible for independently performing detailed dimensional, visual, and final inspections of complex sheet metal assemblies, CNC machined components, structural weldments, and finished products throughout the manufacturing process. This intermediate-level position ensures product conformity to engineering drawings, customer specifications, and AS9100 quality management requirements through the application of precision measurement techniques and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
The role supports manufacturing quality by identifying and documenting nonconformances, maintaining accurate inspection records, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to prevent defective products from progressing through production or reaching customers.
Scope & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform assigned duties in accordance with documented procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, engineering specifications, and manufacturing routing sheets.
- Independently conduct in-process, finishing, and final dimensional and visual inspections of complex sheet metal assemblies, CNC machined components, structural weldments, and finished products.
- Perform final inspection and product acceptance activities to verify compliance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and established quality standards.
- Set up and operate precision inspection equipment, including digital height gages, optical comparators, micrometers, calipers, thread micro-gages, and other dimensional measuring instruments.
- Interpret automated Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) reports to evaluate dimensional conformity and make product acceptance or rejection decisions within established authority.
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, manufacturing specifications, and GD&T requirements to verify dimensional accuracy and product conformity.
- Inspect painted, plated, welded, and other finished surfaces for compliance with applicable cosmetic, dimensional, and customer acceptance criteria.
- Verify welding and painting requirements against applicable customer specifications, including reviewing weld logs, paint certifications, and supporting special process documentation.
- Create, update, and maintain accurate inspection data, measurement records, and quality documentation within the company's ERP and Quality Management System (QMS).
- Compile and review preliminary inspection data packages, ensuring required inspection records, certifications, and supporting documentation are complete and accurate.
- Independently identify and reject nonconforming products in accordance with established quality procedures and assigned inspection authority.
- Initiate and document formal Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), including detailed descriptions of dimensional discrepancies, visual defects, and technical deviations.
- Coordinate immediate containment and segregation of nonconforming materials to prevent unintended use, further processing, or shipment.
- Collaborate with Production, Engineering, and Quality personnel to communicate inspection findings, resolve technical discrepancies, and support corrective action activities.
- Work directly with manufacturing personnel to identify recurring quality issues and support containment of potential quality escapes at the source.
- Verify proper calibration status, handling, and maintenance of inspection equipment prior to use.
- Support internal quality audits, continuous improvement initiatives, and compliance with applicable AS9100 requirements.
- Maintain organized inspection records and ensure compliance with company quality procedures, safety standards, and customer requirements.
