About The Role

The Maintenance Director is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing all maintenance, repair, and reliability activities across Plant Operations. In this salaried, full-time role, you will provide strategic direction and hands-on leadership to ensure that all equipment, facilities, and systems are safe, compliant, and operating at peak efficiency. You will lead a team of maintenance professionals, manage budgets and resources, and collaborate closely with operations, safety, and engineering to minimize downtime, extend asset life, and support the organization’s production goals. This position requires a balance of technical expertise, strong people leadership, and the ability to build and continuously improve a proactive, preventive, and predictive maintenance culture.

What You'll Do

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the Maintenance function within Plant Operations, setting goals, priorities, and performance standards.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance strategy, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs for all plant equipment and facilities.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of maintenance supervisors, technicians, and support staff, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Plan, schedule, and oversee maintenance activities to minimize unplanned downtime and maximize equipment availability and reliability.
  • Establish, monitor, and continuously improve key performance indicators (KPIs) for maintenance (e.g., equipment uptime, mean time between failures, maintenance backlog, maintenance cost per asset).
  • Collaborate closely with Operations, Engineering, Safety, and other departments to coordinate maintenance work, prioritize critical tasks, and support production schedules.
  • Oversee the implementation and effective use of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or equivalent tools for work orders, asset history, inventory, and reporting.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, forecasts, and cost controls, including labor, materials, contracted services, and capital projects related to plant infrastructure and equipment.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements, and champion best practices in safe work procedures.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance plans, and documentation for equipment, utilities, and facilities.
  • Coordinate and oversee external contractors and service providers, ensuring work quality, adherence to specifications, and compliance with company standards and policies.
  • Lead or support root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring equipment failures and implement corrective and preventive actions to improve reliability.
  • Evaluate and recommend equipment upgrades, replacements, and capital improvement projects to enhance plant performance, efficiency, and safety.
  • Ensure effective spare parts and inventory management to support critical maintenance needs while controlling costs and minimizing obsolescence.
  • Drive training initiatives to enhance the technical skills and cross-functional capabilities of the maintenance team.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on maintenance performance, project status, and strategic initiatives to senior leadership.
  • Stay current with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to plant maintenance and operations, and integrate relevant improvements into the department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent combination of education and extensive maintenance leadership experience may be considered.
  • Significant progressive experience in plant, facilities, or industrial maintenance, including prior experience in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Demonstrated success leading maintenance teams in a manufacturing, industrial, healthcare, or large plant operations environment.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and utility systems commonly found in plant operations, along with an understanding of building and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Proven experience developing and managing preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Hands-on experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and maintenance planning/scheduling tools.
  • Solid understanding of safety regulations, environmental compliance standards, and best practices related to plant and equipment maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, analyze costs, and make data-driven decisions to improve maintenance performance and asset reliability.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building skills with the ability to motivate and develop a diverse maintenance workforce.
  • Excellent problem-solving and root cause analysis skills, with a track record of implementing effective long-term solutions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to be on-site full-time and to respond to emergencies or critical plant issues outside of standard working hours as needed.
