Position Summary
The Crane and Rigging Manager oversees all crane and rigging operations within the shipyard, ensuring safe and efficient execution to meet critical lift requirements and crane and hoist operations. This role is accountable for meeting safety, quality, schedule, and cost objectives while supporting production through effective planning, coordination, and resource alignment. The Crane and Rigging Manager provides direct leadership of 6 employees and oversight of up to 60 crew employees.
Domestic and international travel may be required.
Essential Functions
- Provide leadership, planning, and technical oversight for crane and rigging teams, ensuring alignment with production schedules, regulatory requirements, and operational objectives.
- Develop and approve lift plans, rigging configurations, and equipment selection; inspect job sites to ensure proper setup, equipment condition, and safe positioning within load capacity limits to perform lift safely
- Perform advanced load analysis, including interpretation of load charts, center of gravity, multi-sling and load angle deduction factors, ensuring all lifts remain within safe structural and stability limits.
- Monitor and enforce safe crane and rigging practices, and preventative maintenance (lubrication), including participation in Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and safety programs
- Troubleshoot operational issues and complex lifts; maintain accurate inspection, maintenance, and operational records; oversee rigging activities (including inspection, documentation, and registration); and monitor/report performance against budget, labor, and schedule.
- Ensures team compliance with ASME B30 safety standards, NAVFAC P-307, and OSHA 1926 Subpart CC regulations by actively monitoring lifting operations, verifying proper interpretation and use of hand and voice signals, and confirming all activities align with manufacturer specifications to maintain a zero-incident work environment.”
- Must have expertise with rigging equipment, proper techniques, and principles, including spreaders (2-way and 4-way), shackles (pin and screw pin types), wire rope configurations, synthetic and nylon slings (straight, basket, and choker), and chain falls (manual, hydraulic, and air)
- Must have expertise in mobile, overhead, luffing tower, and hammerhead tower cranes, including crane setup, maneuvering, and site-specific safety protocols
- “Must safely work at significant heights on ladders, scaffolding, and ship structures in compliance with fall-protection requirements; navigate uneven terrain, and maintain balance on elevated platforms or crane structures; lift, carry, and maneuver equipment or rigging hardware weighing up to 75 pounds; maintain clear depth perception and hearing to respond to verbal commands or radio signals in loud shipyard environments
- Must have strong Microsoft Office Suite computer skills
- Must have strong organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills
- Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor
- Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMSNA and have high values for safety awareness
- Perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Company policies, procedures, and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; employee recognition and discipline; resolving employee concerns; and developing employees with the skills, competencies, and values needed to achieve Company goals
Education and Experience
- Journeyman, Technical, or Associate degree, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- 2 years of crane and rigging experience required, shipyard or ship repair, or industrial environment preferred
- NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) or equivalent nationally accredited certification is preferred for both Mobile and Tower Cranes

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk; use hands and arms to grasp, handle, manipulate, or feel objects and controls; stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch; and speak or hear. The employee may lift and/or move up to 35lbs regularly and up to 50lbs occasionally. Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid climates. The employee may also be required to work in confined spaces and at varying heights. PPE is required to minimize noise exposure, moving machinery, weather elements, and other potential hazards, including the risk of injury.
