Position Summary

The Director of Radiology is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and evaluating the activities of the Imaging Services department including Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, CT scan, Ultrasound, and MRI in such a manner that the hospital's goals and objectives are achieved. The Director is responsible for the overall supervision and development of the Radiology staff to include orientation, training and educational in-services. Ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients ranging from newborns to the elderly. This position partners with multiple departments to coordinate processes in an effort to improve patient care and the quality of services provided. Works collaboratively with the hospital staff, physicians, and leadership team to strategically align clinical outcomes with industry best practices.

General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Directs, plans, and coordinates the daily activities of the clinical support staff in the Radiology department to ensure proper coverage in all areas; ensures delivery of quality, safe, and compassionate patient care and compliance with standards and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Monitors patient satisfaction scores and develops and implements department improvement plans to include working collaboratively with other departments on organizational wide initiatives.
  • Reviews and monitors the quality of work performed and provides guidance in obtaining high-quality images; ensures proper maintenance and safe operation of imaging equipment, such as x-ray machines, fluoroscopes, computerized tomography (CT) scanners, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment.
  • Provides a safe environment by monitoring radioactive exposure of staff and patients; keeps staff and patients safe by controlling radium loading and handling techniques and maintaining radium records that meet regulatory requirements.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with Radiologists and physicians to improve quality results by evaluating accuracy and quality of services; providing assistance with the implementation of new techniques, equipment, and procedures.
  • Works with service vendors in equipment evaluation, price negotiation and utilization of Radiology contract staff in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Ensures Radiology Medical dictation services are efficient, cost effective, and performed to established standards; works collaboratively with the Medical Records department to ensure timely completion of requested transcription services.
  • Functions as a staff Nuclear Med Tech, Radiology Tech when needed.

Leader Responsibilities

  • Interviews, selects, and supervises the activities of the department staff; communicates, interprets, and explains hospital policies and procedures, department objectives, organizational goals and budget.
  • Defines department work methods and performance standards; prepares and discusses annual appraisal with direct reports; authorizes and communicates salary changes, promotions, transfers, discipline, discharges and administers all other personnel actions for the department.
  • Establishes reporting and approval procedures; delegates authority to assistants in order for them to direct the work of others; provides authorization for supervision, orientation, training, job objectives, performance standards and appraisal, personal development, safety, communication, discipline, grievances and other personnel actions.
  • Provides for maintenance of appropriate records in order to assure that the quality, quantity and timeliness of work done can be documented; reviews and appraises the work of others within the department; reviews and evaluates departmental performance; provides updates to Administration of department progress and any significant factors affecting assigned responsibilities.
  • Ensures compliance with all state, federal and accreditation laws and requirements; maintains professional competence of staff through education and coordination with senior staff; plans for short and long-range goals of the department in concert with the whole organization.
  • Prepares, upon request, reports and special studies; participates in and contributes to management and professional committees at all levels inside and outside of the organization; keeps informed of trends and changes which relate to assigned functions.
  • Prepares, plans and submits the department budget to the CFO for review and approval.
  • Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Identifies, initiates, manages and participates in Performance Improvement activities to support organizational goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

  • Current Professional Licensure Required

Certification / Licensure Requirements

  • Current IL Diagnostic Radiology License Required
  • Current ARRT (R) Required
  • Current ARRT (N) or NMTCB Nuc Med Certification Required
  • Current IEMA Radiography / Nuc Med Required
  • BLS Required

Experience Requirements

  • Radiography, Mammography, and CT scanning minimum 5 years Preferred
  • Supervisory minimum 2 years Preferred

Computer Skills

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Additional Skills

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Capable of taking initiative to make decisions and is an advocate for change and improvement
  • Excellent management skills and ability to motivate a team environment
  • Knowledge of state, federal, accreditation and regulatory agency laws and requirements
