What You’ll Do:
- Perform quality control and assurance sampling/testing of aggregates and manufactured materials.
- Inspect production facilities for materials such as fly ash, traffic paint, and structural steel within your assigned inspection area.
- Document findings, prepare reports, and carry out technical duties in accordance with established procedures.
- Collaborate with contractors, producers, suppliers, local agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Support winter operations through snow and ice removal duties.
What We’re Looking For:
- Knowledge of highway and bridge construction materials is required.
- Familiarity with construction methods is a plus.
- Ability to use or learn computer hardware and software related to inspection activities.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Certifications Required (or ability to obtain):
- Aggregate Tech
- PCC Level I
- Soils
- Additional certifications as needed
Work Environment:
You’ll work under the general direction of the District Materials Engineer, with opportunities to collaborate across teams and make a direct impact on Iowa’s infrastructure.
Location: Oskaloosa, Iowa
Shift Requirements: Days, 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.
Special Requirements:
- A CDL permit upon hire.
- Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date. Entry Level Driver Training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT. The multi-
faceted training will help meet all state and federal regulations.
- A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.

- A pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing programs.

- Designated positions must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Instruction Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License must be obtained and maintained with air brake and tanker endorsements in order to continue employment. Other endorsements may also be required.
- If a CDL is not designated, all positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
- In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
- Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
- Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation's Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
- Employees must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
- Employees in designated positions must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
