POSITION OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Shop Supervisor, Pressure Welder/Fitters at Thermogenics are responsible for welding, fabricating, plant fitting and assembling boilers and pressure vessels designed and fabricated according to ASME boiler and pressure vessel sections I, IV and VIII Division 1. This includes boilers, economizers, blowdown tanks, deaerators and fittings as well as piping designed and fabricated according to ASME B31.1 and B31.3.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Pressure Welding and Fitting
Main Activities:
- Accurately read and interpret blue prints and drawings to independently execute jobs and tasks to specification
- Ensure pipes are fitted according to drawings and field measurements
- Use bandsaws to cut pipe to correct size
- Complete weld preparation by grinding or cutting
- Weld following all gas metal arc, shielded metal arc, or gas tungsten arc welding procedures and processes
- Assess equipment, structures, materials and job specifications for appropriate welding positions and methods
- Clean weld utilizing grinders and/or wire wheels as necessary
- Operate coil winder machinery and use torches to perform hot bends on tubes and pipes
- Successfully prioritize assigned jobs and order required steps correctly to meet established deadlines
- Liaise with Engineering team to troubleshoot any design difficulties
- Other duties as required.
Fabrication
Main Activities:
- Ensure accuracy of drawings and layouts to drive operational efficiency and avoid the need to complete re-works
- Appropriately lay out and safely cut materials using the correct tools and equipment
- Cut and fit steel by means of bandsaws and grinders
- Measure and assemble materials according to blue print and drawing instructions
- Weld as required using gas metal arc and shielded metal arc welding processes
- Perform finishes on assembled parts using grinders and wire wheels
- Safely lift and manage the size and weight of materials and finished products throughout the process
- Other duties as required.
Safety and Professionalism
Main Activities:
- Employ a safety-first mindset and contribute to a safe environment daily
- Fully participate in all required training sessions related to Pressure Welder job types
- Provide professional feedback on received trainings and maintain an awareness of any expire dates related to training requirements
- Support and train new or less experienced colleagues on various welding processes as required
- Ensure compliance with all safety training, policies, practices and procedures and consistently apply on the job to create a safe work environment
- Monitor work environment for hazards and maintain health ventilation levels to avoid particle or gas inhalation
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment and the maintenance of engineered controls (e.g. guards)
- Report any potential hazards (e.g. faulty equipment) or potentially hazardous conditions to management immediately
- Ensure good housekeeping in all work spaces
- Other duties as required.
TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Basic maths skills and strong mechanical aptitude.
- Proficiency in GMAW, SMAW and GTAW processes and procedures
- Solid understanding of welding symbols
- Knowledge of cutting and fabrication processes.
- Knowledge of industry safety practices.
- Ability to set-up and operation welding, bevel machines and bandsaws
- Ability to read and understand prints, drawings and technical bulletins
- Ability to read and interpret manuals
- Confident in the use a variety of tools, machinery and computer technology (e.g. welding and fabrication equipment, oxyacetylene torches, grinders, bandsaws, etc.)
TERM, HOURS OF WORK AND COMPENSATION:
Hours of work are 40 hours / week and structured according to the plant schedule as follows:
Monday – Thursday 6:30am – 5:00pm
May also be from 6:30 am to 3:45 pm Monday to Thursday and 6:30 am to 11:30 am on Friday. Occasional overtime (e.g. weekends) work may become available as required in the business and paid at overtime rates.
We expect to compensate the successful candidate at hourly rates consistent with market and based on experience. The role is entitled to 4% vacation pay and paid statutory holidays. We have a full benefit package and retirement.
