Nasittuq provides Operation & Maintenance services for the North Warning System (NWS). The NWS is a joint Canada and United States early-warning radar system with 47 sites located in Northern Canada; a Control Centre and Support Centre located in North Bay, ON and a Contract Management Office located in Ottawa, ON.

Summary

Reporting to the NWSCC Facilities Supervisor, the Welder (Facilities Maintenance Technician) is responsible for conducting welding repairs on Facilities systems at the North Warning System (NWS) Long Range and Short Range Radar sites.

This is a Unionized seasonal position. The candidate must be comfortable working in colder climate. All travel to/from site, including board and meals, is provided.

Responsibilities:

  • Repair according to technical drawings, layouts, or specific work orders by welding metal components together.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions.
  • Fit mating parts together according to drawings.
  • Perform structural welding repairs discovered during the radar tower inspection as per structural engineer direction.
  • Operate welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as flux-cored arc welding.
  • Set up and operate various equipment such as torches, drills, various clamping tools, squares, disc grinders and other handheld tools.
  • Grind, cut and priming of metal.
  • Fit, braze and torch-straighten metal.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using processes such as gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and shielding metal arc welding (SMAW).
  • Keep performance and maintenance records on equipment.
  • Document and maintain facilities files as related to the work management system, work plans, field/incident reports, data analysis, etc.
  • Respond to emergency situations (unexpected failures)

Secondary Duties:

  • Assist in effecting design changes to improve equipment efficiency and/or reduce cost of operation.
  • Provide feedback to the Sustainment Services department on minor modifications, additional work projects and maintenance task reviews.
  • Conduct environmental, safety, security and quality checks and audits, general housekeeping in support of a healthy and safe workplace environment and taking proactive and corrective measures in these areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which are transient in nature.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Minimum Grade 12 Education.
  • CWB certified welder of steel

Experience:

A minimum of two years of experience on the job training working in a commercial or industrial setting.

Knowledge of:

Proficient in GMAW, SMAW of steel

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Ability to work efficiently and independently.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and work management system.
  • Customer service and detail oriented.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Standard First Aid trained with CPR Level A (with valid certificate).
  • Hold a valid class ‘G’ driver’s license, or provincial/territorial equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain a Reliability Clearance or be eligible to obtain one. Approval of security clearance by the Canadian Industrial Security Directorate is a condition of employment.

Working Conditions:

This position will be required to travel to various NWS sites, some of which are in remote, northern locations and subject to inclement weather conditions. Work will take place both indoors and outdoors, at times be physically demanding.
