The Position

The City of Maple Grove is seeking a Combination Inspector-Plumbing & Mechanical responsible for reviewing plans and conducting inspections for building projects. In this role you will be part of a team that represents the City on a daily basis, conducting inspections while developing and nurturing strong relationships with a diverse group of customers.   • Reviews residential and commercial plans, construction documents, and permit applications to ensure adherence to applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Interprets and communicates code impacts, including prescriptive and performance-based design considerations.
  • Reviews and approves or denies alternative design requests and deferred submittals.
  • Conducts on-site inspections of materials and construction methods at various stages to verify compliance with codes and approved plans.
  • Investigates site conditions for conformance with existing infrastructure and safety standards.
  • Issues correction orders, stop work notices, citations, and enforces compliance through documented corrective actions.
  • Stay informed of updates to building codes, legislation, and industry standards.

Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices, methods and techniques for conducting construction project plan review and inspections.
  • Materials and best practices used in construction projects.
  • Basic mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry relevant to construction plan review and inspection work.
  • International Codes with Minnesota amendments.
  • City building codes and ordinances.
  • Microsoft Outlook, Word, and other relevant software.

An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Need to have:
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Minnesota Drivers License
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a journeyman or master plumber
  • Five years of experience as an HVAC and/or plumbing inspector, or five years of experience as an HVAC technician and/or journeyman plumber
Nice to have:
  • Experience in building inspection
  • Ability to obtain state delegation
  • Certification by:
    • State of Minnesota as a Building Official
    • ICC as a Commercial or Residential Mechanical Inspector, or Fuel Gas Inspector
  • Previous experience working in building inspections for the city


Pre-employment
This position will require the successful completion of a reference check, background check, and medical screening.


WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Office and field environment. Exposure to computers for correspondence, e-plan review, and resulting inspection. Exposure to inclement weather conditions onsite, work around heavy construction equipment and work on elevated structures

Physical Conditions:
Essential, and other important responsibilities, and duties require maintaining a physical condition for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time; significant walking on a daily basis; inspecting in confined spaces; climbing, stooping, kneeling, and heavy lifting; general manual dexterity; having adequate hearing, vision, and speech, and ability to operate assigned equipment/vehicle.
