At RWJBarnabas Health, our Registered Nurses at Children's Specialized Hospital help children reach milestones that once seemed out of reach. As a Per Diem RN supporting the Infant & Toddler Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit in New Brunswick, you'll provide compassionate, family-centered care to infants and young children recovering from complex illnesses, injuries, neurological conditions, and developmental challenges. Working alongside an expert interdisciplinary rehabilitation team, you'll play a vital role in helping patients build strength, independence, and confidence while supporting families throughout every step of the rehabilitation journey. Joining Children's Specialized Hospital means becoming part of a nationally recognized pediatric rehabilitation program where collaboration, innovation, and clinical excellence transform lives every day.

As a Per Diem Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:

  • Performing comprehensive nursing assessments and utilizing the nursing process to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized pediatric rehabilitation plans of care
  • Providing compassionate, age-appropriate nursing care for infants and toddlers recovering from complex medical, neurological, orthopedic, and rehabilitation needs
  • Partnering closely with physicians, therapists, case managers, child life specialists, and the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team to coordinate seamless, patient-centered care
  • Educating parents and caregivers on treatments, developmental goals, rehabilitation techniques, and discharge planning to support continued success at home
  • Monitoring patient progress, recognizing changes in condition, and communicating clinical updates to the care team to promote optimal outcomes
  • Delegating appropriate responsibilities to licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and nursing assistants while supporting teamwork and high-quality patient care
  • Serving as a clinical resource and role model for nursing assistants, nurse externs, students, and newly hired staff
  • Supporting continuity of care by maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring timely communication between caregivers and interdisciplinary team members
  • Demonstrating sound clinical judgment, effective problem-solving skills, and leadership by assuming relief charge responsibilities as needed
  • Promoting a safe, respectful, and family-centered environment that honors the cultural, emotional, and developmental needs of every child and family

This role might be for you if:

  • You are passionate about caring for infants, toddlers, and children with complex rehabilitation needs
  • You enjoy partnering with families and celebrating every developmental milestone, no matter how small
  • Strong communication and teamwork allow you to collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines
  • You remain calm, compassionate, and adaptable in a dynamic pediatric rehabilitation environment
  • You value evidence-based practice, continuous learning, and delivering individualized, family-centered care
  • You enjoy mentoring others and contributing to a positive, collaborative team culture
  • You are committed to helping children achieve their greatest level of independence and quality of life

To be considered for this Per Diem Registered Nurse opportunity, you must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and hold an active New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing. Current American Heart Association BLS certification is required. Previous pediatric and/or rehabilitation nursing experience is strongly preferred. Candidates should possess excellent clinical assessment, communication, and critical thinking skills, along with a passion for family-centered pediatric care. This per diem position offers flexible scheduling while providing the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of infants, toddlers, and their families within one of the nation's leading pediatric rehabilitation hospitals.
