Principal Facilities Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Facilities Engineer based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to provide technical leadership for advanced renewable energy facilities supporting the transition toward a lower-carbon future.
You will serve as a key engineering resource responsible for optimizing plant performance, reliability, and operational safety across multiple facilities.
Working closely with operations teams and multidisciplinary engineers, you will solve complex technical challenges and improve asset performance.
The position combines process engineering expertise, troubleshooting, project support, and continuous improvement within a growing renewable energy environment.
You will contribute to both existing plant operations and the development of future facilities through engineering reviews and technical guidance.

Accountabilities:

The Principal Facilities Engineer will act as the primary technical partner for assigned renewable energy facilities, supporting safe operations, improving plant performance, and providing engineering expertise across a regional portfolio. This role requires strong process engineering knowledge, operational awareness, and the ability to collaborate with multiple technical teams.

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for operators and technicians across multiple renewable natural gas facilities.
  • Support safe and efficient plant operations by identifying performance improvements and resolving technical challenges.
  • Act as a process safety leader by participating in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), Management of Change (MOC) activities, and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Optimize facility availability, gas recovery performance, and product delivery reliability.
  • Troubleshoot process issues, equipment failures, and operational challenges impacting production.
  • Lead root cause analyses for events resulting in unplanned downtime and develop corrective actions.
  • Scope, design, and support implementation of minor facility modifications through established engineering processes.
  • Participate in engineering reviews for new facility developments and provide technical feedback.
  • Review engineering documentation and technical submissions from external engineering partners.
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, operations, and other engineering disciplines to improve facility performance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, efficiency, and operational excellence.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced process or facilities engineer with a strong background in gas processing, industrial operations, and technical problem solving. The role requires the ability to work independently, collaborate across teams, and apply engineering expertise to complex operational environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in natural gas processing, refining, petrochemicals, renewable energy, or a related industry.
  • Strong technical understanding of gas processing equipment design, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience interpreting and working with Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Ability to analyze process performance, identify improvement opportunities, and develop practical solutions.
  • Experience with process safety practices, including hazard analysis and change management processes.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with operations and technical teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred.
  • Experience with renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with gas compression, pressure swing adsorption, membrane separation, flares, thermal oxidizers, process controls, or instrumentation is preferred.
  • Experience with process simulation tools such as Aspen HYSYS or ProMax is a plus.
  • Knowledge of relief system sizing, pipe hydraulics, control valve selection, and heat transfer calculations is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel domestically as needed (up to approximately 25%).
