Job Description

Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Radiation Therapy Assistant (RTA) supports the radiation oncology care team by ensuring the safe, efficient, and compassionate flow of patients through the treatment center. Working under the direction of the Lead Radiation Therapist and licensed Radiation Therapists, the RTA performs non-clinical and delegated support tasks — including patient preparation, treatment room turnover, equipment and supply management, scheduling coordination, and patient/family communication — that allow the licensed therapy team to focus on treatment delivery. This is a non-licensed, non-certified support role; the RTA does not operate radiation-emitting equipment, calculate or administer radiation dose, or perform any task requiring ARRT certification or state radiologic licensure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Greet, prepare, and escort patients to and from treatment rooms; verify identity using two patient identifiers per PHS/ARO policy.

• Assist Radiation Therapists with non-clinical aspects of patient positioning, such as arranging immobilization devices, linens, and comfort aids under direct supervision.

• Perform treatment room turnover between patients, including cleaning, restocking, and equipment staging in accordance with infection control protocols.

• Maintain and organize immobilization devices, positioning aids, and treatment accessories; report equipment issues to the Lead Radiation Therapist or biomedical engineering.

• Coordinate daily treatment schedules with front desk and clinical staff to support on-time patient flow and minimize wait times.

• Communicate professionally with patients and families regarding appointment timing, treatment-day logistics, and general department procedures (clinical questions are directed to the Radiation Therapist or Radiation Oncologist).

• Support documentation and data-entry tasks in the electronic medical record and treatment management system as delegated, without entering clinical treatment parameters.

• Observe and report any patient discomfort, distress, or safety concerns to the supervising Radiation Therapist immediately.

• Assist with inventory management and ordering of clinical and treatment-related supplies.

• Adhere to all radiation safety, infection control, HIPAA, and PHS/ARO compliance policies.

• Participate in department meetings, competency reviews, and required annual training.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Radiation Therapist, Practice Manager, or Radiation Oncologist.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED required; postsecondary coursework in a health science or medical assisting field preferred.

• Prior experience in a healthcare, oncology, or medical office setting preferred; radiation oncology experience a plus.

• Current BLS/CPR certification required (or obtained within 30 days of hire).

• Working knowledge of medical terminology; oncology-specific terminology preferred.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact compassionately with patients undergoing cancer treatment.

• Comfort working around radiation-treatment equipment and understanding of general radiation safety principles (department-provided training).

• Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and basic office software.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements at all times.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple patients and tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment.
