About This Position

Provide personal care and assistance to residents as needed. Carry out procedures following proper instructions. Foster self-respect and a feeling of worth in each resident by providing consistent understanding and kindness in their care. Observe and report changes in residents’ physical and emotional condition to the Charge Nurse. Maintain an attractive, comfortable, and clean environment for the residents. Assist in admitting, discharging, and transferring residents. Prevent spread of disease and infection by following established universal precautions. Attend staff meetings, classes and ongoing in-service programs to improve knowledge and skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide assistance to patients’ basic care needs: dressing, grooming, shampoos, shaving; oral care, nail care, skin care; bathing, including bed baths, tub baths, showers, and whirlpool baths; answering call lights and delivering messages; care of resident valuables and other property.

Assist patients with ambulation: getting in and out of bed, transfer techniques, walking with/without assistive devices; use of wheelchairs; use of orthopedic appliances.

Assist patients with feeding as necessary.

Provide assistance to patients with environmental needs: making beds, changing linens as necessary; clean and maintain orderly utility rooms, linen closets, and storage cabinets; collect, bag, and transport soiled linen to soiled utility and central bath areas; cleaning of equipment.

Assist patients with or provides basic toileting care: ambulation to bathroom; use of bedpan, urinal, or bedside commode; bowel and/or bladder training; care of incontinent episodes; providing perineal care; measuring output; recording bowel movements, urination, emesis, drainage, etc.

Provide assistance to patients with preventative care; prevention of decubitus ulcers, ROM exercises to prevent contractures; mental and physical stimulation to prevent disorders due to sensory deprivation.

Assist patients with or provides treatments and procedures when properly instructed: obtaining temperatures, pulses, respirations, weight; carrying out postmortem care; carrying out isolation techniques and procedures.

Assist patients with activity programs; assists with resident transport to outside activities; assists in taking residents outside for a walk or pushes wheelchair.

Ensure established infection control and universal precautions are maintained when performing duties.

Maintains a professional attitude and appearance.

Support the facility’s goals and objectives.

Attends a minimum of eighteen (18) hours of in-service education per year.

Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES:

Must have a current certification in the State of as a nursing assistant.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must have HIV/AIDS training per state guidelines.

Current CPR card preferred.

Ability to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner and to be able to carefully follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently throughout the workday.

Maintain good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.

Ability to manage and cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position accordingly.

Work closely with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset people.

Assume the responsibility for maintaining professional competence through participation in programs, seminars, and/or training.

Willing to work beyond the normal working hours, on weekends, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.

Ability to handle department equipment according to standard procedures.

Ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and visitors with flexibility, personal integrity, sensitivity, and discretion at all times.

Reports all accidents and incidents to supervisor no matter how minor they may be.

Attends and participates in in-service classes, on-the-job programs, etc. as scheduled and directed.

Honor the Residents’ Rights polices at all times.

Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, tact, and the ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and visitors.

Maintains and protect the privacy and confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) per the company’s HIPAA medical privacy policy.

Be expected (and required) to perform any task in a safe, sanitary and efficient manner in accordance with established procedures.

Follows facility safety program.

Assumes accountability for data contained in the Employee Handbook.

Any exposure to blood or body fluids that contain visible blood must be reported to supervisor on the shift in which the incident occurs.

Be familiar with universal precautions (i.e. frequent hand washing, using gloves, etc.).

Understand that this position contains Category I tasks that may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

Ability to understand and use universal precautions and appropriate protective measures, which are readily available to every employee, engaged in Category I tasks.

Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
