Job Title: Certified Peer Support Specialist
Location: Southgate, MI
Job Type: Full-Time/Part-Time
Reports To: Karen Robinson Executive Director
Job Summary
The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) uses lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges to provide support, encouragement, and guidance to individuals navigating recovery. This role fosters a person-centered approach by building relationships, promoting self-advocacy, and connecting individuals to community resources. The CPSS works as part of a multidisciplinary team to assist clients in achieving their recovery goals.
Key Responsibilities
Peer Support & Mentorship
- Provide one-on-one and group peer support using recovery-oriented principles.
- Share lived experiences to inspire hope and model recovery strategies.
- Assist individuals in developing coping skills, self-advocacy, and goal setting.
Advocacy & Resource Navigation
- Support individuals in accessing healthcare, housing, employment, and social services.
- Advocate for client rights and reduce stigma surrounding mental health and substance use.
- Educate clients about available community resources and assist with referrals.
Collaboration & Documentation
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, attending meetings and case discussions.
- Maintain accurate documentation of interactions and support provided.
- Adhere to confidentiality policies and ethical peer support standards.
Training & Professional Development
- Participate in ongoing training and supervision.
- Stay informed about best practices in peer support and recovery models.
- Complete requires continuing education to maintain certification.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Certification as a Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) in Michigan.
- Lived experience with mental health or substance use recovery (minimum one year of sustained recovery).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to establish trust and maintain professional boundaries.
- Basic computer and documentation skills.
Preferred:
- Experience in peer support, behavioral health, or case management.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care and harm reduction strategies.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work may be conducted in offices, community settings, or virtually.
- Some travel may be required to meet with clients or attend trainings.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
