Job Title: Certified Peer Support Specialist

Location: Southgate, MI

Job Type: Full-Time/Part-Time

Reports To: Karen Robinson Executive Director

Job Summary

The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) uses lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges to provide support, encouragement, and guidance to individuals navigating recovery. This role fosters a person-centered approach by building relationships, promoting self-advocacy, and connecting individuals to community resources. The CPSS works as part of a multidisciplinary team to assist clients in achieving their recovery goals.

Key Responsibilities

Peer Support & Mentorship

  • Provide one-on-one and group peer support using recovery-oriented principles.
  • Share lived experiences to inspire hope and model recovery strategies.
  • Assist individuals in developing coping skills, self-advocacy, and goal setting.

Advocacy & Resource Navigation

  • Support individuals in accessing healthcare, housing, employment, and social services.
  • Advocate for client rights and reduce stigma surrounding mental health and substance use.
  • Educate clients about available community resources and assist with referrals.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, attending meetings and case discussions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of interactions and support provided.
  • Adhere to confidentiality policies and ethical peer support standards.

Training & Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing training and supervision.
  • Stay informed about best practices in peer support and recovery models.
  • Complete requires continuing education to maintain certification.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Certification as a Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) in Michigan.
  • Lived experience with mental health or substance use recovery (minimum one year of sustained recovery).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish trust and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Basic computer and documentation skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience in peer support, behavioral health, or case management.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and harm reduction strategies.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work may be conducted in offices, community settings, or virtually.
  • Some travel may be required to meet with clients or attend trainings.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
