This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Managing Consultant, Research & Evaluation based in the United States.
As Senior Managing Consultant, Research & Evaluation, you will lead complex research, evaluation, and consulting engagements from initial design through final delivery. You will develop rigorous qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches that help utility clients make informed, practical decisions. The role combines research expertise with client advisory, project leadership, financial management, and team development. You will work with multidisciplinary teams spanning consulting, analytics, engineering, data science, and subject matter expertise. Your insights will help clients understand customer experiences, evaluate programs, manage challenges, and identify opportunities for improvement. You will also contribute to thought leadership, business development, and the continued evolution of research and consulting capabilities. - Lead the design and delivery of applied research and evaluation engagements, including evaluation plans, research frameworks, data-collection strategies, analytical approaches, and reporting plans.
- Apply qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research approaches to evaluate program performance, understand customer experiences, answer complex business questions, and generate actionable insights.
- Design and oversee field research such as in-depth interviews, surveys, focus groups, observational research, ethnographic interviews, usability testing, and user experience research.
- Interpret research and evaluation findings within their broader business and industry context, identifying implications, tradeoffs, risks, and opportunities.
- Develop high-quality, decision-ready client deliverables, including reports, presentations, executive summaries, memos, and research papers.
- Serve as a lead author and quality reviewer for executive-level findings, recommendations, and client-facing materials.
- Advise clients by combining research expertise, business judgment, clear communication, and an understanding of utility programs and customer challenges.
- Build trusted client relationships by listening carefully, clarifying complex questions, navigating ambiguity, interpreting findings, and helping clients define practical next steps.
- Develop scopes of work based on client needs, including research methodologies, timelines, budgets, assumptions, staffing requirements, and deliverables.
- Identify opportunities to expand or deepen client engagements where additional research, analysis, or advisory services can deliver meaningful value, and contribute to proposals and business development activities.
- Own project planning, budget management, financial tracking, risk management, resource planning, and successful delivery of assigned engagements.
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams that may include consultants, analysts, engineers, data scientists, data management specialists, and subject matter experts.
- Establish clear expectations around responsibilities, timelines, quality standards, deliverables, and accountability, adapting plans as project requirements evolve.
- Lead project kickoffs, client meetings, internal working sessions, debriefs, and other key project interactions while contributing to financial and resource planning.
- Keep project sponsors, directors, and internal leadership informed about progress, budgets, cost-to-complete, staffing requirements, risks, dependencies, and milestones.
- Identify resource requirements early and proactively address or escalate issues that could affect project timelines, budgets, quality, or client satisfaction.
- Mentor and develop team members in applied research, evaluation methodologies, consulting practices, client communication, and high-quality deliverable development.
- Provide constructive feedback that strengthens technical rigor, communication, client readiness, and individual professional growth.
- Model strong consulting behaviors, including ownership, sound judgment, responsiveness, curiosity, preparation, and accountability.
- Contribute to a collaborative culture that values substantive expertise, thoughtful problem-solving, continuous learning, and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to thought leadership and represent the organization in client meetings, industry discussions, webinars, conferences, and other professional forums as appropriate.
- Demonstrated experience leading applied research, program evaluation, customer research, user experience research, or consulting engagements from initial design through delivery.
- Strong foundation in applied research methodologies, with particular expertise in qualitative research and familiarity with quantitative or mixed-method evaluation approaches.
- Experience developing research or evaluation plans, designing data-collection instruments, overseeing analysis, and translating findings into clear recommendations.
- Proven ability to manage client relationships and navigate complex stakeholder environments with professionalism, sound judgment, and strong communication skills.
- Experience managing project scope, budgets, timelines, risks, dependencies, and multidisciplinary teams while maintaining quality and client value.
- Strong client-ready writing, presentation, facilitation, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex research approaches and findings to nontechnical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust quickly with clients and colleagues through preparation, responsiveness, curiosity, thoughtful communication, and accountability.
- Experience mentoring, coaching, or developing junior and mid-level team members, with a commitment to strengthening both technical and consulting capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams, competing deadlines, budgets, and stakeholder expectations without compromising research rigor or delivery quality.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, particularly when timelines, dependencies, project requirements, or client priorities change.
- Experience evaluating utility, energy-efficiency, demand-side management, electrification, customer experience, or distributed energy resource programs is highly desirable.
- Recognized subject matter expertise in a relevant research, evaluation, energy, utility, customer, or consulting discipline is a strong plus.
- Experience supporting proposal development, finalist presentations, account expansion, or other business development activities is preferred.
- Experience representing an organization through client engagements, industry forums, webinars, conferences, or other professional events is advantageous.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote environment while maintaining strong collaboration, communication, and project ownership.
- Authorization to work for any employer in the United States or Canada is required; employment visa sponsorship is not currently available.
- $105,000–$130,000 USD annual salary, plus an annual bonus; actual compensation may be adjusted based on experience.
