Position Summary

The Painter I performs surface preparation, body repair, and paint application to restore Genie equipment to a high-quality, customer-ready finish. Working under moderate supervision, the Painter I has gained full proficiency in routine preparation and refinishing tasks and handles standard assignments independently while following established work instructions, safety procedures, and Genie Recon quality standards.

This is a hands-on production role that combines craftsmanship with disciplined process control. The Painter I contributes directly to product quality, customer satisfaction, and a safe, clean work environment, and represents the proficient level on the Paint career ladder.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Sand, grind, scuff, and clean surfaces to prepare them for primer and paint, following established preparation standards.
• Remove rust, old coatings, contaminants, and surface defects to achieve proper adhesion.
• Mask, tape, and protect areas not to be painted, and set up the worksite to control overspray and contamination.
• Perform dent removal, minor panel straightening, and basic panel preparation to restore surface integrity.
• Apply, shape, and sand body filler to achieve smooth, defect-free surfaces.
• Inspect prepared areas for fit and finish prior to coating.
• Mix and apply primers, basecoats, and topcoats using spray systems and related application tools.
• Adjust spray equipment settings (pressure, pattern, flow) to achieve consistent coverage and finish on routine work.
• Apply coatings in accordance with manufacturer specifications, environmental controls, and Genie Recon finish standards.
• Buff, polish, wet-sand, and detail finished surfaces to remove imperfections and achieve a customer-ready appearance.
• Perform quality inspection of the finish and correct routine defects before the unit advances.
• Set up, operate, clean, and perform routine maintenance on spray equipment, sanders, grinders, and related tools.
• Wear all required personal protective equipment (respirator, eye protection, gloves) and follow OSHA, EHS, and Genie Recon safety procedures at all times.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area, and properly handle, label, and dispose of paints, solvents, and hazardous materials.
• Document work performed and record quality or process data as directed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, or comparable demonstrable work experience.
• One (1) or more years of experience in automotive, industrial, or equipment painting, body repair, or surface finishing, or equivalent demonstrated proficiency.
• Working knowledge of surface preparation, spray application, and finishing techniques.
• Ability to read and follow work instructions, safety data sheets, and basic measurements.
• Ability to safely operate spray equipment, sanders, grinders, and related hand and power tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Formal training or certification in auto body, refinishing, or industrial coatings.
• Experience with paint mixing and color matching systems.
• Prior experience in a manufacturing or remanufacturing production environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Proficient use of spray application equipment, sanders, grinders, and finishing tools.
• Working knowledge of paint systems, coatings, primers, fillers, and proper application sequences.
• Ability to mix and apply coatings to achieve consistent color and finish on routine work.
• Attention to detail and a consistent focus on quality and a defect-free finish.
• Effective communication and the ability to coordinate work with peers and the Supervisor.
• Reliable understanding and application of safety and hazardous-material handling procedures.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands

• Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist for extended periods throughout the shift.
• Perform repetitive motions associated with sanding, spraying, and finishing.
• Regularly lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds; occasionally handle heavier items with assistance or lifting aids.
• Maintain steady hand control and visual acuity sufficient to evaluate color, coverage, and surface finish.
• Wear a respirator and other required PPE for sustained periods.

Work Environment

• Manufacturing and paint-shop environment with exposure to paint fumes, solvents, dust, noise, vibration, and varying temperatures.
• Work in and around spray booths, preparation areas, and production equipment.
• Use of required PPE and adherence to ventilation, respiratory, and hazardous-material controls is mandatory.
