Senior Environment Artist

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Environment Artist based in Canada.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced VFX artist to create highly realistic environments for feature films and episodic productions.
You will work primarily in Houdini, collaborating closely with Asset Artists to build detailed, production-ready environments and sets.
The role also offers close collaboration with LookDev, Lighting, and other creative departments across the VFX pipeline.
You will bring strong artistic judgment and an understanding of realistic physical environments to visually compelling screen productions.
Beyond environment creation, you’ll have opportunities to expand your generalist skillset and deepen your understanding of the wider VFX workflow.

Accountabilities:
  • Create and develop environments: Build, set up, and refine realistic environments and digital sets in Houdini for high-end Film and TV productions.
  • Collaborate across departments: Work closely with Asset Artists to integrate and assemble assets into cohesive environments, while collaborating with LookDev, Lighting, and other departments throughout production.
  • Deliver production-ready work: Ensure environments meet the artistic, technical, and quality expectations of the project and are suitable for integration into final shots.
  • Apply realistic principles: Use a strong understanding of physics, scale, materials, spatial relationships, and natural-world references to create convincing environments.
  • Contribute creatively: Bring strong artistic judgment, visual storytelling, and attention to detail to the design and execution of environments.
  • Support the wider VFX pipeline: Communicate effectively with other artists and departments, respond constructively to feedback, and help resolve creative or technical challenges.
  • Develop generalist capabilities: Take opportunities to broaden your skills across adjacent areas of the VFX pipeline and contribute beyond your core environment responsibilities when appropriate.
  • Maintain collaborative standards: Contribute to a respectful, supportive, and creative team culture while helping deliver high-quality work under production deadlines.
Requirements:
  • Professional VFX experience: Demonstrated experience working on high-level visual effects projects for film, television, or episodic productions.
  • Houdini expertise: Professional experience creating and setting up environments in Houdini.
  • Maya experience: Strong working experience with Maya and familiarity with integrating workflows between Maya and Houdini.
  • Environment artistry: Excellent artistic eye for creating detailed, believable, and visually compelling environments.
  • Realism: Strong understanding of realistic physics, scale, natural forms, spatial relationships, and environmental detail.
  • Technical creativity: Ability to combine artistic judgment with practical technical skills to produce efficient, production-ready environments.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable working closely with Asset, LookDev, Lighting, and other VFX teams within a collaborative production pipeline.
  • Attention to detail: Strong visual awareness and a high standard for quality, consistency, and realism.
  • Communication: Able to receive feedback, discuss creative decisions, solve problems collaboratively, and communicate effectively with colleagues.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment and adapting to different project requirements and creative challenges.
  • Growth mindset: Interest in developing broader generalist capabilities and continuously improving technical and artistic skills.
