Environmental Director

Salary / Full-Time

Location: Southeast (NC, SC, AL, GA)

Regional Environmental Director – Southeast Industrial & Municipal Land Application Programs

Position Summary
The Regional Environmental Director is a senior leadership role responsible for directing and overseeing all environmental compliance, permitting, agronomic management, and land application activities for industrial and municipal biosolids and residuals programs throughout the Southeast region. This highly independent position requires a mature, self-motivated leader capable of managing complex regulatory programs, developing strategic stakeholder relationships, and leading multi-state environmental operations teams.

The Regional Environmental Director serves as the primary environmental and regulatory authority for the region and is responsible for ensuring operational excellence, permit compliance, customer satisfaction, and sustainable land application practices. The ideal candidate possesses strong leadership abilities, extensive knowledge of EPA 40 CFR Part 503 regulations and state environmental regulations, experience in biosolids land application or residuals management, and a background in agronomy, environmental science, or a related field.

This position works closely with executive leadership, operations, sales, municipal and industrial customers, regulatory agencies, consultants, farmers, and contractors to support company growth, compliance, and operational efficiency.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance & Environmental Oversight

  • Lead and oversee environmental compliance activities for all regional land application operations across assigned Southeast states.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including EPA 40 CFR Part 503 biosolids regulations and applicable permitting requirements.
  • Direct preparation, submission, and renewal of environmental permits, nutrient management plans, regulatory reports, and compliance documentation.
  • Oversee all required biosolids, soil, and environmental sampling programs to ensure regulatory and agronomic compliance.
  • Maintain accurate environmental records, databases, manifests, application tracking systems, and customer compliance reports.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies, inspectors, and environmental consultants.
  • Conduct periodic site inspections and compliance audits to verify adherence to permit conditions, operational standards, and environmental best practices.
  • Proactively identify compliance risks and implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.

Operational Leadership & Program Management

  • Direct and manage regional environmental personnel.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development for regional environmental teams.
  • Coordinate closely with Operations leadership to ensure adequate land base availability and efficient management of material volumes.
  • Develop and implement regional environmental strategies that support operational growth, customer retention, and long-term sustainability.
  • Support operational scheduling and logistics planning to ensure compliant and efficient land application activities.
  • Establish performance metrics, monitor key operational indicators, and drive accountability throughout the region.
  • Ensure all environmental and operational personnel receive required regulatory and safety training.
  • Support emergency response activities, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation when necessary.

Land Base Development & Stakeholder Relations

  • Acquire, maintain, and expand adequate agricultural land base to support current and future customer needs.
  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with farmers, landowners, municipalities, industrial customers, regulators, contractors, and community stakeholders.
  • Act as primary liaison between operations teams, farmers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Address stakeholder concerns promptly and professionally while maintaining strong customer and community relationships.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Business Development, and Operations teams to support new customer acquisition and regional growth initiatives.
  • Identify and evaluate new land application opportunities and strategic partnerships.

Strategic Leadership & Business Development

  • Partner with operations to develop and execute regional business strategies and environmental initiatives.
  • Provide technical expertise and strategic guidance regarding regulatory trends, permitting challenges, and environmental risk management.
  • Assist with contract reviews, proposal development, customer presentations, and project evaluations.
  • Represent the company professionally at industry conferences, trade shows, public meetings, and regulatory forums.
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, and expansion activities related to environmental operations and land application programs.

Leadership & Managerial Responsibilities

  • Lead a geographically dispersed environmental team across multiple states and operational areas.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, compliance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations, establish development plans, and support succession planning initiatives.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resource allocation, and environmental program expenditures.
  • Establish priorities and delegate responsibilities to ensure timely completion of deliverables and regulatory obligations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Transportation, Sales, Safety, Compliance, and Executive Leadership teams.
  • Drive operational consistency and standardization across regional programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Biology, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of experience in environmental compliance, biosolids management, residuals management, or land application operations.
  • Prior management or leadership experience required.
  • Strong working knowledge of EPA 40 CFR Part 503 regulations and state environmental permitting requirements.
  • Experience working with municipal and industrial residuals programs preferred.
  • Knowledge of agronomy, nutrient management, soils, and agricultural operations.
  • Experience interacting with environmental regulatory agencies and managing permit compliance.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with environmental reporting systems, spreadsheets, databases, and compliance tracking software.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively throughout the Southeast region.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in office, field, and operational environments
  • Ability to walk job sites and operational facilities
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions when conducting inspections or site visits

Work Environment

This position operates in both office and field environments including industrial facilities, transportation yards, construction sites, landfills, and operational locations. The Environmental Director must maintain a strong safety presence and promote compliance and environmental responsibility throughout all company operations.
