Job Description

Summary: Under the general direction of the Associate Athletic Director for Communications and Creative Content, the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications will be responsible for various duties with the Athletic Communications and Creative Content office including, but not limited to, serving as liaison between coaches, student-athletes, administrators and representatives from the media, campus, and community.

This position will assist with the planning, execution and evaluation of specific projects related to relationships between Queens Athletics and the external campus community. The position will work closely with the communications staff as well as the staffs in Development, Marketing, and Ticketing in defining and prioritizing specific objectives and strategies for external support and communication. This position will also assist in the elevation of the Queens Athletics brand by heading internal and external content creation for sports assigned, while also building and overseeing the creative content staff made up of one graduate assistant, student workers, and interns.

The position includes being a primary contact for men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s soccer.

This position is considered a Responsible Employee for purposes of the university’s Sexual Misconduct Policy. As such, this position is required to report any incident of sexual misconduct or interpersonal violence to the university’s Title IX Coordinator when made aware of such.

Queens conducts confidential background investigations on candidates as part of the hiring process, including any past NCAA rules violations. According to the NCAA bylaws:

“Contractual agreements or appointments between a coach and an institution shall include the stipulation that a coach who is found in violation of NCAA regulations shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective action as set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension without pay or termination of employment for significant or repetitive violations.”

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the primary communications contact for assigned sports, handling writing and editing press releases, graphic design, creative content, and social media communications. Oversee game-day operations from the communications arm of the department for assigned sports.
  • Assist in coordinating daily media relations tasks for sports assigned
  • Develop and produce creative content (graphics and video) for social media accounts and in venue experience pertaining to sports assigned
  • Generate content for the athletics web site (queensathletics.com) that is designed to promote the overall message of the Department of Athletics.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with members of the media to ensure optimal coverage of the Royals programs, coaches, student-athletes, and staff.
  • Assist in the department’s marketing, ticketing, and development initiatives.
  • Represent the department and the University, both internally and externally, on various committees as necessary and appropriate.
  • Maintain statistical data and historical archives for sports assigned.

Non-Essential Duties

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department or university needs

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications, sport management or journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in an intercollegiate athletics communications office (including as a student assistant or intern).
  • Strong computer skills along with excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of AP style.
  • Ability to follow-up and follow-through to ensure completion of challenging goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively towards team objectives.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Photography, videography, and video editing skills preferred
  • Proficiency with various software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working with Stat Crew or NCAA Live Stats software
  • Experience with Sidearm Sports or similar content management system
  • Experience as a primary sport contact in a collegiate athletics communication setting preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to work nights and weekends and travel regularly with assigned teams to achieve objectives of the position.
