The Supervisor is a full-time, contract-based position supporting environmental cleaning and housekeeping operations at the VA Medical Center in Long Beach, California.

About the Job
This position performs cleaning, disinfecting, floor care, restroom cleaning, waste removal, and general housekeeping throughout a working medical facility while also providing direct leadership to employees assigned to the shift.
Supervisors organize the shift, assign work, communicate expectations, monitor progress, and inspect completed areas. This is a hands-on leadership position. Supervisors are expected to work alongside employees, understand the team’s cleaning responsibilities, demonstrate proper procedures when needed, and set the standard for quality, safety, professionalism, reliability, and teamwork.
Because this work takes place in a healthcare setting, attention to detail, proper cleaning and disinfection procedures, safety, infection-control practices, and effective supervision are especially important.
What You’ll Do
Your responsibilities may include:
- Lead employees assigned to the shift and provide clear day-to-day direction regarding work assignments and priorities.
- Organize the shift and assign employees to areas and tasks based on cleaning requirements, staffing, and operational needs.
- Communicate assignments, priorities, special requests, and expectations at the beginning of and throughout the shift.
- Monitor employee progress and keep the team focused on completing assigned work within the scheduled shift.
- Perform cleaning duties alongside the team and lead by example in quality, safety, professionalism, attendance, and work habits.
- Clean and disinfect patient-care, clinical, administrative, and common areas using approved healthcare cleaning procedures.
- Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, vacuum, scrub, buff, burnish, strip, wax, and otherwise maintain floors.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, showers, sinks, toilets, urinals, fixtures, partitions, and other surfaces.
- Clean exam rooms, offices, waiting areas, break rooms, corridors, stairwells, elevators, and other assigned spaces.
- Empty, clean, and reline trash receptacles and properly handle designated waste, including biohazard waste as assigned and trained.
- Clean glass, mirrors, doors, walls, counters, baseboards, furniture, fixtures, and other surfaces.
- Dust and disinfect horizontal and high-touch surfaces.
- Refill restroom and facility dispensers and maintain supplies in assigned areas.
- Respond promptly to spills, messes, and other cleaning needs.
- Perform routine and detailed floor care, including carpet cleaning and spot treatment.
- Perform terminal and other enhanced healthcare cleaning procedures as assigned and trained.
- Safely fill, move, lift, carry, and empty mop buckets and other cleaning containers.
- Push, pull, maneuver, and operate commercial cleaning and floor-care equipment.
- Properly use and reinforce the proper use of cleaning chemicals, PPE, wet-floor signs, equipment, and other safety controls.
- Follow and reinforce established infection-control, safety, security, cleaning, and facility procedures.
- Conduct routine inspections of assigned areas and completed work to verify that cleaning standards have been met.
- Identify incomplete, missed, or unsatisfactory work and ensure deficiencies are corrected.
- Follow up on assignments and corrective work to confirm completion.
- Provide employees with respectful, timely feedback, coaching, and direction regarding their work and performance.
- Address routine employee or operational issues within the responsibilities of the Supervisor position.
- Recognize when a performance, conduct, safety, staffing, or operational concern requires management involvement and escalate it promptly.
- Communicate staffing issues, call-offs, incomplete work, quality concerns, safety issues, employee concerns, and other significant shift matters to management.
- Help coordinate coverage and adjust assignments when staffing or operational needs change during the shift.
- Support the training and orientation of new employees and reinforce proper cleaning procedures and workplace expectations.
- Monitor supplies and equipment during the shift and communicate shortages, damage, repair needs, or other concerns.
- Maintain required shift, inspection, employee, or operational documentation as assigned.
- Support effective communication and handoffs between shifts, including clearly identifying incomplete work or matters requiring follow-up.
- Complete assigned cleaning schedules and help ensure the team meets established quality and performance standards.
The contract includes sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, burnishing, carpet cleaning, high/low dusting, restroom cleaning, wall and grout cleaning, sink cleaning, trash removal, and general housekeeping duties in a hospital setting.
What We’re Looking ForHealthcare or clinical cleaning experience is preferred. Candidates should have previous janitorial, commercial cleaning, custodial, environmental services, housekeeping, floor care, or other relevant cleaning experience.
Previous experience as a supervisor, team lead, shift lead, or in another position involving responsibility for directing the work of others is preferred.

- Able to communicate clearly and professionally with employees, other supervisors, management, VA personnel, Veterans, and visitors.
- Safety-conscious and able to reinforce established safety requirements with employees.
- Comfortable working in an active healthcare environment.
- Knowledgeable about or able to learn established cleaning, disinfection, infection-control, and safety procedures.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- Able to perform physical and repetitive cleaning tasks throughout the scheduled shift.
- Able to successfully complete the required federal background, credentialing, and badging process.
The strongest candidates will also have:
- Previous supervisory, team-lead, or shift-lead experience.
- Previous experience directing employees, assigning work, monitoring performance, or inspecting completed work.
- Healthcare or hospital environmental services (EVS) experience.
- Janitorial, commercial cleaning, custodial, housekeeping, or facility-cleaning experience.
- Experience with commercial floor-care procedures and equipment.
- Experience training or coaching employees on cleaning procedures or workplace expectations.
- Experience conducting cleaning or quality inspections.
- Familiarity with healthcare cleaning, disinfection, infection-control, PPE, chemical handling, and workplace safety requirements.
- Experience working in a healthcare, federal, government, or other regulated facility environment.
Position Details
- Employment: Full-Time
- Compensation: $19.73/hour base wage + $5.42/hour health and welfare benefit
- Shift Options (Shift availability may depend on current staffing needs):
- 7:00 AM–3:30 PM | Monday–Friday
- 12:00 PM–8:30 PM | Monday–Friday
- 3:30 PM–12:00 AM | Monday–Friday
- 8:00 AM–4:30 PM | Wednesday–Sunday
- HamHed provides the required work shirt. Employees are responsible for providing their own appropriate work pants and non-slip work shoes.
Federal Facility Background Check & Badge Requirement
This position requires access to a federal VA healthcare facility. Employees must complete the background and credentialing process required to obtain the identification badge necessary to access and work within the facility.
Continued employment in this position is contingent upon approval for the required VA facility access. If an employee is not approved for the required badge/access, the employee cannot perform work at this facility.
Employees must wear their required identification badge while working and comply with all facility access and security requirements. The contract specifically provides that contractor personnel may not work at the facility without the proper identification badge.
Physical & Work Environment
This is a physically active, working-supervisor position performed throughout an active medical facility. Supervisors are expected to perform janitorial duties in addition to their leadership and oversight responsibilities.
Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The position requires:
- Extended periods of standing and walking throughout the scheduled shift.
- Frequent bending, reaching, stooping, twisting, and repetitive movement.
- Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and other repetitive cleaning activities.
- Lifting and carrying the weight necessary to perform assigned cleaning duties, including filled mop buckets, trash, cleaning supplies, and other materials used in the performance of the job.
- Pushing, pulling, controlling, and maneuvering commercial cleaning carts, equipment, and floor-care machines.
- Safely performing physical cleaning tasks in corridors, patient-care areas, restrooms, offices, and other spaces throughout the facility.
- Regularly walking assigned areas to monitor employees, inspect completed work, identify deficiencies, and follow up on assignments.
- Moving between multiple work areas throughout the shift to provide employee support and respond to operational needs.
- Demonstrating cleaning procedures, equipment use, and proper work methods when necessary.
- Balancing physical cleaning responsibilities with employee supervision, inspections, communication, and required documentation.
Employees may work around cleaning chemicals, waste, bodily fluids, or potentially contaminated materials, and other conditions associated with healthcare environmental services. Employees must wear required PPE and follow applicable infection-control and safety procedures.
The contract requires employees to use appropriate PPE, safely handle equipment and cleaning operations, use warning signs when cleaning may create a hazard, and maintain safe access for patients, visitors, and staff. These requirements mirror the physical and environmental expectations established for the underlying Janitor position.
