Job Description

Reports to the Director, Patient Care Services. Manages the sterile preparation, distribution and storage of surgical supplies and equipment. Manages, organizes and administers assigned associates and department resources and processes. Ensures smooth interaction between Sterile Processing, Surgery and other departments. Ensures optimal sterile processing performance; through quality control and quality assurance of all Sterile Processing activities and equipment. Monitors and reports equipment operational status. Recommends equipment changes, upgrades and additions to meet manufacturers' instructions for use (IFU) for all items processed. Assures departmental standards of operation and policies are in compliance with regulatory and professional agencies, including but not limited to CMS, TCJ, AAMI, AORN, APIC.

Manages the sterile preparation of surgical supplies and equipment for the operating room and other departments by:

  • In collaboration with Facilities Maintenance Department, establishes a preventative maintenance program for Sterile Processing equipment. Maintains adequate inventory of equipment to meet Medical Center requirements.
  • Administering Hospital and department policies and procedures; ensuring effective communication to staff to ensure efficient sterile processing operations.
  • In collaboration with Facilities Maintenance Department, establishes a preventive maintenance program for Sterile Processing equipment. Maintains adequate inventory of equipment to meet Medical Center requirements.
  • Maintaining regular contact with user departments to ensure services, inventories and processing times are meeting and/or exceeding user demands.
  • Interviewing, hiring, assigning work to, scheduling, evaluating and when necessary, disciplining and discharging assigned associates.
  • Participating in the research, evaluation and determination of capital expenditures for new and replacement equipment, instrumentation and supplies for the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Facilitating staff development, education, and orientation processes.

Develops and maintains an effective cost and inventory control system by:

  • Working with Purchasing and Distribution departments in the establishment of reorder points on semi-routine stock to ensure the cost effective processing and distribution of materials and supplies.
  • Suggesting inventory levels on special equipment/supplies by providing technical expertise regarding storage requirements, special treatment procedures, etc.

Ensures optimal efficiency in department processes and that quality control standards are met by:

  • Utilizing LEAN, 5S and related methodologies to streamline and improve departmental processes and procedures.
  • Establishing and monitoring standards of quality for the preparation, sterilization, storage and distribution of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Facilitating the development, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement programs; involving associates in the process.
  • Preparing monthly reports and statistics of Sterile Processing Department activities.
  • Performing appropriate committee functions as assigned.
  • In collaboration with Facilities Maintenance Department, establishes a preventative maintenance program for Sterile Processing equipment.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of equipment to meet Medical Center requirements.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Participating in continuing education and attending conferences as approved.

  • Completing other job related assignments and special projects, as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associates comply with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Comply with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

Required

  • The above level of knowledge, skills and abilities are acquired through the successful completion of an Associate's Degree.
  • Current Sterile Processing Technician certification (CRCST) from International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAAHCSMM) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) required.
  • Requires three years of experience in process management and/or inventory management, preferably utilizing LEAN, 5S or related methodologies.

Preferred

  • Prior management experience in a related material processing.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, manufacturing, healthcare administration, public health, health sciences is preferred or 5 to 10 years’ experience in an acute care Level 1 or Level 2 trauma hospital.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience in a union environment preferred.

*Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) or Certified Sterile Processing Management Certification (CSPM) preferred and/or must be obtained within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires knowledge and skills related to processes including LEAN, 5S concepts and project management.
  • Must have or obtain a thorough knowledge of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, packaging and distribution of sterile and non-sterile surgical supplies, equipment and instruments for the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Demonstrates well developed managerial and leadership skills and labor relations knowledge necessary to organize and direct the personnel and activities necessary to ensure the effective and safe processing and handling of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Requires analytical skills necessary to effectively evaluate department needs and inventory reports and prepare materials and operating budgets.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, management, user departments, etc.
  • Demonstrates well developed communication skills, both verbal and written to articulate ideas clearly and concisely with staff and user departments.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification required within one year of hire.

?Working Conditions

  • Works in an office and sterile processing environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable objects to handle and possible exposure to biohazards.
  • Accesses surgical environment as need arises.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.
