Job Description
Position Summary
The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) at Kansas Renewal Institute plays a crucial role in supporting youth with emotional, behavioral, or psychiatric challenges in a structured residential environment. BHTs implement therapeutic interventions, provide daily supervision, and assist in maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu in collaboration with clinical and medical teams.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and engage with residents in a supportive, trauma-informed manner
- Assist in implementing individualized treatment and behavior management plans
- Provide crisis intervention using approved de-escalation techniques (e.g., CPI)
- Monitor and document residents' behaviors, progress, and incidents accurately
- Support residents with activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Facilitate or assist with group activities, educational sessions, or recreation
- Ensure a safe, clean, and structured environment
- Communicate effectively with clinical staff, families, and other team members
- Transport residents when necessary, following safety protocols
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, training, and supervision
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 1 year experience in behavioral health, residential, or youth services setting preferred
- Valid driver’s license or State issued ID
Skills/Knowledge (all preferred)
- Working knowledge of all regulatory requirements
- Strong leadership, management, and supervisory skills.
- In-depth knowledge of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, psychiatric care, and behavioral health disorders.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage complex clinical situations and provide direction to staff.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, analytical and critical thinking skills.

- Trauma-Informed Care & Therapeutic Engagement: Applies trauma-informed principles to build trust, support emotional regulation, and promote positive behavioral outcomes in all resident interactions.
- Behavioral Intervention & Crisis Management: Utilizes approved de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies to safely manage behavioral escalations while adhering to least restrictive intervention standards.
- Documentation & Regulatory Compliance: Completes accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in alignment with organizational policy, HIPAA requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Milieu Management & Daily Living Support: Maintains a structured, therapeutic environment and supports residents with daily living, routines, and skill-building activities.
- Communication & Team Collaboration: Communicates effectively with interdisciplinary team members, provides clear shift handoffs, and reports changes in resident behavior or condition promptly.
- Professionalism & Ethical Practice: Demonstrates integrity, maintains professional boundaries, and adheres to organizational policies, confidentiality standards, and ethical guidelines.
- Adaptability & Critical Thinking: Responds effectively to dynamic situations, applies sound judgment, and demonstrates problem-solving skills in a fast-paced behavioral health environment.

- Work schedule includes evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on operational needs.
