Job Summary
The Harris-Stowe State University TRIO Pre-Collegiate Programs (Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search) seek dynamic, student-centered instructors in Math, Business, and History to join our Summer Academy Faculty. This position supports high school students (rising 9th–12th grade) through engaging, rigorous, and innovative instruction designed to strengthen academic readiness and college preparation.
The TRIO Summer Faculty position is a temporary teaching position during the TRIO Pre- college Summer Component for students rising in grades 9 - 12. The program runs on the following dates:
- Tuesday, May 26, 2026 – Thursday, May 28, 2026Tuesday, June 2, 2026 – Thursday, June 4, 2026Tuesday, June 9, 2026 – Thursday, June 11, 2026Monday, June 15, 2026 – Wednesday, June 17, 2026Tuesday, June 23, 2026 – Thursday, June 25, 2026
Program hours are from 8:00AM – 4:00PM, and the typical teaching day is from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. In addition to teaching the content of their specific position, teachers are also expected to attend professional development, collect student performance data and participate in development of individual student learning plans. All Summer Faculty will be required to attend a Professional Development and Student Orientation on May 22nd.
Required Commitments:
- Attend the mandatory Professional Development and Student Orientation on May 22, 2026.
- Teach all scheduled class sessions as assigned throughout the program duration.
- Maintain professionalism and punctuality at all times.
Mathematics: Algebra I & II, Geometry, SAT/ACT Math Preparation
Business: Introduction to Business, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, Leadership & Career Readiness
Essential Functions
- Attend required Staff Training and Student Orientation Session prior to the Beginning of the Summer Academy.
- Participate in Program Awards Ceremonies activities.
- Lead up to four sections of their subject area, two days per week (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday) during Weeks 1-5.
- Creatively engage Scholars in up to 6 Hours of Course sessions each week.
- 6 Hours of Office Hours each week.
- Hold weekly Standing Meetings with Supplemental Educator/Tutor Assistants.
- Update Grades and Attendance weekly.
- Conduct Pre and Post-Test Assessments to measure Growth throughout the Course.
- Create and submit Syllabus outlining Session Design (Assignments and Materials).
- Attend weekly Team Meetings to assess Scholar Performance, review Concerns and highlight Successes.
- Demonstrate Integrity, Dependability, and a Passion for Promoting College Access and Student Success
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Teaching and/or counseling experience at the high school (grades 9–12) and/or college level required; prior teaching experience preferred.
- Experience working with underserved and/or target student populations (high school grades 9–12) preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in teaching and/or counseling high school-aged students.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with effective instructional abilities.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and deliver engaging, fun, and productive learning experiences.
- Proven ability to build positive relationships and relate effectively to students, faculty, and community partners.
- Commitment to regular, consistent attendance and adherence to established policies, procedures, and timelines.
- Demonstrated professionalism, competence, and reflective practice.
- Ability to work collaboratively as a team player in a diverse environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to analyze survey results to determine program effectiveness
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
- Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
Working Conditions and Environment:
- Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment
- Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
