Position Summary

The Director of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) provides strategic leadership, vision, and operational oversight for the development, implementation, and sustainability of evidence based clinical practice across the hospital system. This role ensures that clinical decision making, care delivery models, and organizational policies are grounded in the best available research, clinical expertise, and patient preferences. This position reports to the Aultman System Chief Nursing Executive (CNE).

Areas of Oversight Summary

The Director partners with executive leaders, clinical teams, educators, and quality departments to drive improved patient outcomes, reduce unwarranted variation, and foster a culture of inquiry and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or related field required.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in clinical practice, quality improvement, or research in a healthcare organization; required.
  • Experience working in a complex hospital system environment.
  • Active RN license required; CNS, APRN, or specialty certification preferred.
  • Professional certification required.
  • Doctoral degree (DNP, PhD, EdD, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • Member of an executive professional organization.
  • Minimum of 5 years of emergency or critical care nursing experience, preferred.
  • Obtain and maintain current American Heart Association (AHA) training in Basic Life Support (BLS) utilizing Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) is required.

  • Strong knowledge of EBP frameworks (e.g., Iowa Model, Johns Hopkins EBP Model, PARIHS).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with individuals, teams, partners, customers, and physicians across all professions.

  • Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and influence without direct authority.
  • Proficiency in data interpretation, outcome measurement, and scholarly writing.
  • Strong financial and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Develop and execute a hospital system wide EBP strategy aligned with organizational goals, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of EBP initiatives, toolkits, and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Establish structures and processes that support EBP adoption, including councils, mentorship programs, and interdisciplinary workgroups.
  • Promote a culture of inquiry, innovation, and lifelong learning across all clinical disciplines.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Safety, Nursing, Medicine, and Allied Health leaders to integrate evidence into clinical workflows and care pathways.
  • Guide teams in identifying practice gaps, reviewing literature, appraising evidence, and translating findings into practice.
  • Support hospital system wide performance improvement initiatives by ensuring interventions are evidence based and measurable.
  • Monitor outcomes, evaluate the impact of EBP projects, and report findings to executive leadership
  • Develop and deliver EBP education for clinicians, leaders, and educators at all levels.
  • Mentor staff in conducting literature reviews, critical appraisal, project design, and dissemination of results.
  • Partner with academic institutions to support clinical research, student engagement, and professional development.
  • Facilitate opportunities for clinical research, pilot studies, and scholarly dissemination.
  • Support teams in presenting findings at conferences and publishing in peer reviewed journals.
  • Ensure alignment between research activities and organizational priorities.
  • Serve as a hospital system wide resource and subject matter expert on evidence based practice.
  • Build strong relationships with clinical leaders, educators, informatics teams, and external partners.
  • Collaborate with IT and informatics to embed evidence into electronic health record tools, decision support, and documentation workflows.
  • Provides consultation for complex patient cases, including clinical deterioration, ethical concerns, and high-acuity presentations.
  • Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interprofessional teams to optimize patient outcomes and patient flow.
  • Monitors patient outcomes and trends to identify opportunities for improvement in care delivery.
  • Serves as a mentor, coach, and clinical consultant to clinical staff and leaders.
  • Promotes professional practice standards, shared governance, and specialty certification (e.g., CEN, TCRN).
  • Supports evidence-based practice and research, including dissemination of outcomes and best practices.
  • Analyzes hospital system-level data (quality, safety, throughput, patient experience, workforce metrics) to drive performance improvement.
  • Serves as a clinical leader for regulatory readiness, accreditation (e.g., ACHC, Joint Commission, CMS), and achieving nursing excellence related initiatives.
  • Leads change management efforts to improve efficiency, patient flow, and care coordination across the continuum (EMS, inpatient units, ICU, behavioral health, and community partners).
  • Provides clinical leadership in emergency preparedness, disaster response, and mass casualty planning at the system level.
  • Leads quality improvement projects focused on patient safety, clinical outcomes, and operational excellence.
  • Utilizes data, dashboards, and outcome metrics to evaluate interventions and sustain improvements.
  • Leads root cause analyses, failure mode effects analyses (FMEA), and safety event reviews.
  • Serves as a hospital system-wide consultant for emergency practice and clinical innovation.
  • Leads or participates in research and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Translates research into practice and evaluates outcomes of practice changes.
  • Presents findings internally and externally and supports publication and professional dissemination.

Working Conditions

  • 8:00am – 5:00pm M-F or hours as required by the job.
  • Occasional weekends and off shifts.
  • Travel between hospitals, clinics, and administrative sites.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day.
