GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients, performing, processing, and clerical duties. In addition, the Phlebotomist ensures efficient services for the physicians and quality service to the patients in adherence with expectations set by The Conrad Pearson Clinic.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Demonstrate the ability to draw blood after a four-week training period. Collect specimens according to established procedures. Properly and clearly explains in a courteous manner the process of blood drawing and urine specimen collection. Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment for patients before, during and after the collection process. Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies. Disposes of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies. Maintain departmental supplies and restock patient areas as needed. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Maintain required records and documentation. Performs basic clerical duties, such as filing, faxing, and preparing mail. The person in this position is required to perform electronic data entry. Familiar with the practices and job duties at the Wolf River Clinic and all outlying clinics and is able and willing to work at these locations as needed. Communicate regularly with supervisor, keeping him/her appraised of all pertinent information and providing feedback. Must be able to endure prolonged standing, some bending, stooping and stretching to comply with the essential functions of the job. Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements including OSHA, CLIA and HIPAA; immediately and accurately document and report occurrences to supervisor; and ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements as outlined in the corporate compliance plan. Support and adhere to all company policies, procedures and management decisions; maintain confidentiality of patients’ medical information; and all confidential administrative related issues. Demonstrate dependability in attendance, punctuality in reporting for work and initiative in completing a full work schedule; meeting or exceeding all established deadlines and utilizing all resources and supplies efficiently and appropriately. Demonstrate the ability to concentrate during the course of the day. Display a positive outlook with a helpful, constructive manner when working with other employees. Demonstrate superior patient relations and interpersonal skills; demonstrate an appropriate level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with staff, patients and general public using tact, sensitivity and sound judgment; promote a positive work environment and contribute to the overall efforts of the department and the company.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Two years of laboratory or clinical experience is preferred, preferably in a urology practice. Phlebotomy/venipuncture experience is required. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills. Ability to plan, schedule, prioritize and complete multiple tasks and demands. Some travel to other offices and locations; must provide own vehicle. Occasional overtime, evening and weekend work is required.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires prolonged standing, some bending, stooping and stretching, or performing other work requiring moderate physical exertion. Capacity to maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time (stamina). Normal vision and hearing required. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone and other laboratory equipment. Able to lift up a minimum of 25 pounds.
ESSENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is generally performed under normal office working conditions. Normal level of visual strain. Ability to cope with stress caused by public interaction, multiple demands and extraneous noises. Possible exposure to contagious diseases.
