Job Description
This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Canada.
This role sits at the intersection of applied machine learning, healthcare intelligence, and product engineering, focusing on building AI systems that directly support clinical decision-making and practitioner workflows. You will design and deliver LLM-powered features that transform complex healthcare data into actionable insights, including lab interpretations, conversational AI tools, and decision-support systems. The position requires strong end-to-end ownership, from experimentation and model design through production deployment and continuous improvement. You will work in a highly cross-functional environment alongside product, engineering, analytics, and medical experts to ensure AI outputs are accurate, safe, and clinically relevant. The role is deeply hands-on and product-driven, with a strong emphasis on real-world impact in healthcare workflows. This is an opportunity to shape intelligent systems that directly improve how practitioners deliver care at scale.
- Design, build, and deploy LLM-powered product features including lab summaries, clinical decision-support tools, and practitioner-facing conversational agents.
- Develop and maintain backend services integrating LLMs and machine learning models into production systems using Python and related technologies.
- Build AI systems capable of handling open-ended clinical queries, structured and unstructured healthcare data, and multi-turn interactions.
- Implement prompting, retrieval, grounding, and safety mechanisms to improve accuracy, reliability, and clinical relevance of AI outputs.
- Develop evaluation frameworks, testing strategies, and monitoring systems to assess model performance, hallucination risks, and edge cases.
- Collaborate with product, engineering, medical, and analytics teams to translate clinical requirements into scalable AI solutions.
- Own AI features end-to-end, including experimentation, prototyping, deployment, iteration, and ongoing optimization.
- Contribute to architectural decisions for AI-powered clinical workflows and analytics systems.
- Stay current with advancements in LLMs, agentic systems, and applied machine learning, applying them pragmatically in production environments.
- 5+ years of experience in machine learning engineering, applied AI engineering, or backend engineering with production system ownership.
- At least 2+ years of hands-on experience building LLM-based applications such as RAG systems, conversational agents, or tool-using AI systems.
- Strong backend development skills in Python, with solid understanding of SQL and data-heavy systems.
- Experience integrating LLM APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini into production applications.
- Familiarity with LLM orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, or Hugging Face tools.
- Strong engineering practices including Git, CI/CD, testing, observability, and production monitoring.
- Experience evaluating LLM systems for correctness, hallucinations, edge cases, and long-term reliability.
- Ability to work independently in ambiguous environments and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills and ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical product decisions.
- Bonus: experience in healthcare, clinical workflows, or regulated environments with high-trust AI systems.
- Bonus: familiarity with agent orchestration patterns, tool-calling systems, or multi-step AI workflows.
- Bonus: exposure to Elixir or interest in evolving distributed AI platforms.
- Competitive salary range of 130,000 to 150,000 CAD.
- Flexible PTO and strong emphasis on work-life balance.
- RRSP/401k matching and stock options.
- Comprehensive benefits package including health coverage, paramedical services, and HSA options.
- Remote-first flexibility with preference for candidates in Ottawa, Toronto, or Calgary.
- Discounts on wellness and healthcare products.
- Continuous learning and professional development opportunities.
- Exposure to cutting-edge AI systems in healthcare and clinical applications.
