Job Description

Tech Lead, Core Product Engine (Backend)

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Tech Lead, Core Product Engine (Backend) in Canada.

This role sits at the heart of a high-scale consumer platform transforming how people manage complex, fragmented automotive experiences through technology. You will lead the evolution of a critical backend orchestration layer responsible for completing real-world insurance transactions across multiple external systems. The environment is fast-paced and highly technical, where reliability, scalability, and precision are essential due to the complexity of asynchronous workflows and limited external APIs. You will work closely with senior technical leadership and product-minded engineers to redesign legacy systems into a fault-tolerant, scalable architecture. The role combines deep hands-on engineering with technical leadership, offering significant ownership over core product infrastructure. It is ideal for someone who thrives in high-impact environments where engineering decisions directly influence millions of users.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will lead the design, evolution, and optimization of backend systems that power complex insurance transaction flows, ensuring reliability and scalability across distributed architectures. You will work hands-on while guiding technical direction, refactoring legacy systems, and enabling next-generation automation capabilities.

  • Lead the architecture and evolution of backend orchestration systems handling multi-step, external insurance transactions
  • Refactor and decouple legacy automation systems into scalable, fault-tolerant, and testable architectures
  • Design and implement standards for asynchronous workflows, state management, and failure recovery
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to ensure reliable system behavior under complex real-world conditions
  • Diagnose and resolve deep system issues, improving success rates and operational stability
  • Drive the development of internal tools and automation frameworks to support large-scale growth
  • Contribute to technical strategy and system design decisions in partnership with senior leadership
  • Maintain hands-on coding involvement while mentoring and guiding other engineers
Requirements

This position requires strong backend engineering expertise, deep systems thinking, and proven experience building and scaling distributed or asynchronous systems. You should be comfortable operating in high-ownership environments where technical leadership and hands-on execution are both expected.

  • Strong experience as a senior engineer, tech lead, or early-stage technical founder
  • Proven background in backend systems design, particularly asynchronous or distributed architectures
  • Experience working with complex business logic and external system integrations
  • Strong ability to debug, analyze, and optimize system performance and reliability
  • Deep understanding of system design principles, including decoupling, state management, and retry logic
  • Hands-on experience with modern backend technologies (TypeScript, Node.js frameworks, or similar)
  • Familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with a focus on edge cases, reliability, and operational excellence
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead technical discussions
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation with base salary and equity opportunities
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid time off and flexible work arrangements
  • Paid parental leave and family support programs
  • 401(k) or equivalent retirement savings plan with employer matching
  • Wellness and employee support benefits
  • Opportunity to work on high-impact systems used by millions of users
  • Strong ownership culture with direct access to technical leadership
  • Career growth in a fast-scaling, product-driven engineering environment
