Job Description

**The number of hours for this position could be 32 hours per week or 40 hours per week.**

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Department of Pharmacy has the responsibility for the implementation and coordination of medication control in the process of providing pharmaceutical care for patients of all ages within the medical center. Under direct and close clinical supervision from the Registered Pharmacist, the MMC Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in pharmaceutical preparation, distribution, and the record keeping functions in the delivery of pharmaceutical supplies to patients in accordance with department policies and guidelines. This position holds the accountability for those Technician functions and tasks performed for Pharmacy Service, which require some pharmacy technical training, skills, or professional judgment, including but not limited to; quality reporting, controlled substance handling, purchasing, medication reconciliation, sterile product preparation, hazardous medication preparation, tech-check-tech, and automated dispensing cabinet filling and troubleshooting. A degree of on-the-job training will also be included to successfully perform all tasks listed within this Job Description.

The Pharmacy Technician also carries the added responsibilities of Pharmacy Billing and Inventory Assistant. The additional tasks may be performed in the absence of a licensed pharmacist. A Pharmacy Billing and Inventory Assistant performs functions necessary to aggregate and modify data as necessary to accurately charge patients for the pharmaceuticals used as part of their care, as well as, provide comprehensive control of medications throughout MMC.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Performs service excellence must-haves to achieve an excellent patient/customer experience.

3. *Prepares unit-dose medication based on labels generated from pharmacist order entry and ensures proper barcode is present for administration by nursing according to department guidelines.

4. Differentiates between “stat”, “now”, and “routine” doses and whether it is a medication to be loaded into the automated dispensing machine or if it is needed for the patient specific medication drawer.

5. *Delivers patient medications accurately and in a timely manner according to established department guidelines.

6. *Accurately restocks medications, including controlled substances, in the automated dispensing devices on patient care areas and in ancillary areas.

7. *Operates pharmacy computer system to fill medication replacement orders and missing medication requests; accurately credits and/or returns patient medication in pharmacy computer system as appropriate.

8. *Accurately repackages bulk medication into unit dose packages following established hospital procedures.

9. Troubleshoots automated dispensing devices for medications on nursing units and in ancillary areas as needed.

10. *Utilizes software to generate barcode labels for medication products following established hospital procedures.

11. *Adheres to safety and security procedures to promote a safe and secure environment including adherence to state restrictions on Pharmacy Technician functions.

12. *Performs outdate inspections in Pharmacy and nursing/ancillary areas following established hospital procedures.

13. Assists in developing, revising, and implementing new departmental processes based on organizational and departmental needs.

14. *Interacts and communicates with providers, management, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate departmental operations.

15. *Utilizes mathematical skills in computing the preparation of pharmaceuticals.

16. *Assists the pharmacist in developing accurate patient home medication lists.

17. *Possesses knowledge of brand and generic medication names, common dosages and dosage forms and frequency of administration of each medication.

18. *In collaboration with the pharmacist maintains compliance with the 340B drug program and adheres to policies and procedures.

19. *Participates in departmental education and training programs as appropriate; attends and actively participates in pharmacy staff meetings as scheduled.

20. *Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

21. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

22. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

23. Collaborates with pharmacists in the coordination and development of purchasing processes for the acquisition and control of pharmaceuticals, equipment and controlled substances.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Previous work experience in a healthcare environment preferred.

Registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the state of Nebraska is required. Pharmacy Technician certification from a State of Nebraska approved certification agency preferred but not required until required by the State of Nebraska based on the 1-year anniversary of the individual’s State of Nebraska Pharmacy Technician Registration. Examples include: ptcb, ExCPT, UNMC (NE-CPhT).
