About the role:
Athena is looking for an Accountant who is detail-oriented, highly organized and forward thinking. We work in a spirited, fast-paced, and ever-changing environment and we’re looking for someone who can hit the ground running and thrive in this setting. The ideal candidate should be able to think strategically and implement iteratively.
As Athena continues to scale and integrate Ceisler, this role will play a critical part in building a structured, high-performing finance function. The Staff Accountant – Revenue & Billing will own the end-to-end revenue cycle, ensuring accuracy in billing, collections, and revenue reporting while working closely with delivery teams.
What you’ll be responsible for:
- Generate and manage all client invoices and billing approvals across Athena and Ceisler
- Establish strong rapport with project leads and ensure billing aligns with contracts, SOWs, and project delivery inputs
- Maintain billing schedules (retainers, milestones, and time-based engagements)
- Identify and resolve gaps in billing inputs from internal stakeholders
- Maintain and monitor accounts receivable aging and support collections efforts
- Apply cash receipts and reconcile against outstanding invoices
- Maintain deferred revenue schedules and support revenue recognition processes
- Support monthly close activities including revenue-related reconciliations and account analysis
- Reconcile data across QuickBooks, SPP, and internal systems
- Prepare and maintain supporting schedules for reporting and audit readiness
- Review, research, and resolve discrepancies across billing, AR, and revenue data
- Collaborate with project leads to support accurate billing schedules
- Adhere to workflows while identifying process improvements
- Support ongoing development of revenue and billing processes
- Execute special projects and ad hoc requests
The skills and experience you should have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (CPA or MBA a plus)
- 1–3 years of accounting, finance, or billing experience
- Experience with billing, AR, or revenue processes preferred
- Experience with project-based billing or time systems preferred
- Ability to leverage technology tools effectively (Excel, CoPilot, QuickBooks Online)
- Strong understanding of the matching principle and accrual basis accounting
- Ability to analyze data and apply to engage stakeholders on business-oriented solutions
- High attention to detail and ownership mindset
- Excellent communication skills
