Job Summary

The Field Inspector performs advanced construction observation and materials inspection activities on a variety of infrastructure and commercial construction projects. This role independently verifies that construction activities comply with project specifications, applicable codes, and industry standards (e.g., ASTM, DOT, etc.).

The Field Inspector applies strong technical knowledge and field experience to interpret plans and specifications, identify potential issues, and communicate findings to project teams. This position operates with a high level of independence and serves as a key field resource to support project quality, coordination, and timely delivery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform independent field inspection and observation of construction activities to verify compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable codes.Conduct and oversee construction materials testing (e.g., soil compaction, concrete sampling and testing, asphalt testing) in accordance with applicable standards.Interpret construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements to ensure accurate and compliant field execution.Identify construction deficiencies, deviations, or potential risks and communicate findings to clients, project managers, engineers, and contractors.Document daily field activities, inspection results, and test data through detailed and accurate field reports.Coordinate with contractors and field personnel to schedule inspections, facilitate testing, and support project progress.Provide technical input and field insight to project teams regarding construction conditions, sequencing, and quality concerns.Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot field testing equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.Ensure compliance with company safety policies and promote safe work practices on active construction sites.Perform work in accordance with applicable industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company quality procedures.Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced technicians or inspectors to support skill development and consistency in field practices.


Supervisory Responsibility

This role does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but may provide field guidance, mentorship, and informal leadership to less experienced team members.


Qualifications and Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.5+ years of construction inspection, materials testing, or related field experience.Demonstrated ability to independently perform inspection and testing activities with a high level of accuracy and reliability.Strong working knowledge of construction practices, materials testing methods, and inspection procedures.Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and applicable codes and standards.Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and active construction environments.


Preferred Skills

Associate degree in construction technology, civil engineering technology, or related field.Relevant industry certifications such as ACI, NICET, MnDOT, ICC, or similar credentials.Experience working on transportation, infrastructure, heavy civil, and commercial construction projects.Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications and project documentation systems.Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively with project teams, contractors, and clients.


Pay Transparency

Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $44.00 – $55.00 per hour based on skill set and experience. The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Work Environment  

This job primarily operates in a field environment with frequent travel up to 100% at times including evenings and weekends. This position does require field work in outdoor conditions on construction sites with uneven ground and adverse weather conditions. This role routinely uses personal protective equipment (PPE), testing instruments and equipment, and standard office equipment such as computers, phones, tablets, and photocopiers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands or finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-100 pounds. The employee will occasionally push or pull equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. The employee is required to frequently work outside. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
