Schedule Description
DUTIES
The Supervisor, Network Services, analyses, researches, designs, recommends, budgets, establishes, schedules, arranges, and provides direct supervision for the effective, secure, and efficient operation and maintenance of the University's voice and data communications network unit.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Monitors, maintains, reviews, and verifies the voice and data communication networks to ensure that they allow for the effective, efficient, reliable, and secure day-to-day operation of the institution's network services. The University's voice and data communication systems include: Telephone PBXs, Voice over IP, Voicemail, Local and Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Switches, Routers, Firewalls, CATV systems, and wiring infrastructure.
  2. Supervises, coordinates and provides leadership for staff and/or contractors.
  3. Responsible for participating on hiring committees, orientation of new employees, providing input into performance evaluations, and training of staff.
  4. Acts as project manager overseeing multiple, complex voice and data communications network projects.
  5. Prepares, monitors, and verifies data and voice communication budgets. May make recommendations for budget development based on analyses and research.
  6. Oversees major voice and data communication equipment installations in new and renovated TRU structures. Analyses, researches, designs, recommends, provides input for budget development, establishes, schedules, and arranges for the installation of voice and data communication networks and equipment.
  7. Arranges and monitors the work of contractors that are required to perform regular or emergency tasks.
  8. Analyses, researches, and provides solutions to technical problems by providing effective solutions and recommendations and providing corrective actions.
  9. Arranges and provides response to emergency or on demand work requirements.
  10. Liaises with and coordinates peers, co-workers and contractors. Works closely with IT Services personnel, faculty and staff, consultants, equipment suppliers, Facilities Services personnel.
  11. Analyses and researches new and innovative ways of providing voice and data communication services. Prepares various reports and technical documents.
  12. Arranges for the expansion and development of the University's voice and data networks by the incorporation of new technologies and the replacement of old and obsolete equipment.
  13. Reviews relevant literature in the field of telephone and data communications. Takes advantage of professional development opportunities to keep current.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
  • Two year post-secondary diploma related to voice or data communications or equivalent
EXPERIENCE:
  • Seven years' experience in voice and data communications networks in a large and complex environment, including:
    • Experience in a leadership and/or supervisory role
    • Experience in project management
REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
  • Ability to supervise, train and monitor the work of others
  • Advanced ability to analyze and understand technical manuals, equipment specifications, contract documentation, codes and regulations, working drawings, and technical literature
  • Intermediate ability to prepare construction specifications and technical reports
  • Advanced ability to analyze and understand complex material including working drawings, technical manuals, and reports
  • Advanced interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced ability to understand and operate successfully within a complex environment of multiple interconnected and technical systems
  • Advanced understanding of the principles and operation of voice and data communication systems and equipment
  • Knowledge of various network protocols (e.g. TCP/IP) and communication wiring design (e.g. CAT 5 certification)
  • Ability to deal with users, coworkers and external vendors with courtesy, discretion and tact
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations appropriately
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Sitting at desk and computer for long periods of time; visiting client locations; general office conditions
  • Working in noisy and dusty conditions
  • Ability to lift weights 10kg and over
  • Travel off campus required
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.

$43.52 - $48.36 ( CUPE Grade 13 (90% - 100%) )
