Position Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for developing new products and improving existing products from initial concept through validation and production.

This position involves mechanical design, engineering analysis, material and component selection, manufacturing-process selection, prototyping, testing, certification support, and production implementation. The successful candidate will develop practical engineering solutions that meet performance, safety, quality, cost, manufacturability, installation, and service requirements.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will also act as the technical lead on assigned product-development projects. This includes providing technical direction, coordinating engineering activities, managing technical risks, supporting project planning, and tracking engineering deliverables in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

A practical, hands-on approach is essential. The role includes assembling, modifying, troubleshooting, and testing prototypes ranging from individual components to large mechanical assemblies.

This is a full-time, 100% on-site position at our Brampton, Ontario location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies using SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
  • Develop products in accordance with technical, safety, quality, schedule, cost, manufacturing, installation, and service requirements.
  • Serve as the technical lead for assigned product-development projects, providing engineering direction, design oversight, and technical decision-making.
  • Take ownership of engineering deliverables and drive technical issues to resolution.
  • Support project planning by defining technical scope, estimating engineering effort, identifying risks, and tracking deliverables and milestones.
  • Develop 3D CAD models, 2D production drawings, Bills of Materials, engineering specifications, calculations, test documentation, and other technical records.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyses, including load calculations, tolerance stack-ups, fit assessments, and structural evaluations.
  • Use FEA and other engineering tools to support design decisions and validate mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Verify and validate designs throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development through volume production.
  • Build, modify, and test prototypes for design verification and product validation.
  • Prepare clear test plans, test procedures, engineering reports, and design-validation documentation.
  • Identify root causes of technical problems and develop practical, effective corrective actions.
  • Ensure products comply with applicable local codes, certification requirements, and global standards.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing, design-for-assembly, design-for-installation, and design-for-service principles.
  • Select components, materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes that meet functional, aesthetic, durability, and cost requirements.
  • Work directly with suppliers and vendors to review designs, evaluate manufacturing capabilities, and resolve technical concerns.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and global teams, including Engineering, Quality, Production, Supply Chain, Sales, Marketing, Installation, and Technical Support.
  • Support manufacturing and assembly teams by troubleshooting fabrication, fit, assembly, and production issues.
  • Participate in on-site product installation, testing, troubleshooting, and field-support activities when required.
  • Support the transfer of new products into production, including design reviews, manufacturing documentation, training, and implementation activities.
  • Assist technical writers with the development and review of installation, service, and product documentation.
  • Develop innovative, reliable, and aesthetically appealing products while maintaining cost competitiveness.
  • Adapt to changing project priorities and contribute to multiple product-development initiatives as required.
  • Perform other duties related to the scope and responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant mechanical engineering or product-design experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in industrial product, equipment, machinery, elevator, accessibility, automotive, or similar product-development environments.
  • Demonstrated experience taking mechanical products or complex assemblies from concept through prototyping, validation, and production.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including part modelling, assemblies, configurations, and detailed production drawings.
  • Experience performing engineering calculations and mechanical analysis.
  • Practical experience with FEA for components or assemblies is required; experience with large assemblies is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, including sheet metal, fabrication, machining, welding, castings, and formed components.
  • Solid understanding of design for manufacturing, assembly, installation, maintenance, and service.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, assembly drawings, tolerance analysis, and tolerance stack-up methods.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems; experience with hydraulic systems is an asset.
  • Knowledge of materials, material selection, finishes, and failure modes.
  • Familiarity with certification, regulatory, and product-compliance processes.
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.100 Engineering Drawing Practices and ASME Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the technical aspects of projects and coordinating engineering activities across multiple functions.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause-analysis skills in both product-development and production environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and following through on commitments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working directly with prototypes, tools, manufacturing equipment, production teams, and field installations.
  • Commitment to workplace health and safety, product quality, and efficient engineering practices.
  • Professional Engineer designation, or eligibility for registration in Ontario, is preferred.

Success in This Role

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Ownership and accountability: Takes responsibility for assigned work, follows through on commitments, and proactively drives issues to completion.
