This position is fully on-site and requires a regular presence in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this position.

JOB SUMMARY

The Adjunct Instructor–ARCOM is responsible for supporting the education and professional development of osteopathic medical students through teaching, mentoring, assessment, and scholarly engagement. Adjunct faculty appointments may be clinical or non-clinical in nature, with responsibilities determined by the individual's credentials, expertise, and assigned teaching duties.

Faculty members provide educational experiences in classroom, laboratory, simulation, small-group, clinical, and/or research settings, as appropriate to their area of expertise. They contribute to the integration of biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, and osteopathic principles and practice while fostering student success through mentorship, professional role modeling, and academic support.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Within the assigned area(s) of expertise:

  • Participate in curriculum delivery, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Evaluate student performance, provide timely feedback, and assist with remediation efforts to ensure students meet established educational outcomes and competency standards.
  • Serve as a professional role model and mentor for students, promoting academic achievement, professionalism, and lifelong learning.
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and other healthcare or educational professionals.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to support the College’s mission through teaching, academic service, scholarly activities, patient care (if applicable), community engagement, and special projects.
  • Promote and advance the mission, vision, and reputation of ARCOM through professional conduct and service.
  • Participate in faculty development and other institutional activities as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the designated supervisor.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

Clinical Adjunct Faculty

Faculty whose responsibilities include clinical instruction in clinical skills laboratories, simulation environments, standardized patient settings, or patient care settings must possess:

  • DO or MD degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current board certification or board eligibility in an appropriate specialty, where applicable.
  • Current and unrestricted licensure, as required for clinical practice.
  • Good standing with all applicable regulatory, licensing, and credentialing bodies.
  • Eligibility for coverage under the College’s professional liability insurance program, when applicable.

OR

  • Licensed healthcare professional with a terminal degree in the relevant discipline and demonstrated expertise in the assigned instructional area.

Non-Clinical Adjunct Faculty

Faculty whose responsibilities include classroom instruction, team-based learning, laboratory instruction, interprofessional education, or related academic activities must possess:

  • A terminal degree in their area of expertise (e.g., PhD, PharmD, DNP, EdD, JD, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated expertise in the discipline being taught.

General Qualifications (Applicable to All Adjunct Faculty)

  • Experience in medical, health professions, graduate, or higher education.
  • Experience at a College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Allopathic Medicine, Academic Health Center, or Graduate Medical Education program preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, professional achievement, scholarly productivity, or administrative experience in clinical, educational, research, or professional settings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years academic experience as a full-time faculty member at a College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Allopathic Medicine, Academic Health Care Teaching Center or five (5) years of experience as a full-time faculty member in a Graduate Medical Education Program.
  • Demonstrated leadership and productivity in the areas of clinical or professional service, scholarly activity, medical research or education.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the delivery of medical education in the classroom, laboratory, simulation and standardized laboratory settings “or” in clinical settings for students and residents.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of varied curriculum frameworks template and educational formats.
  • Demonstrate ability to mentor and motivate students and peers.
  • Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in one or more of the medical, psychological, or social disciplines required for the education of medical students, the practice of medicine, the advancement of medical knowledge and research.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, organizational skills, delegation skills, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office.
  • Display professionalism for the college in all communication and interaction.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
  • May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies to include, but not limited to pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboards, telephone, etc.
  • May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices, conference rooms, and on occasion, to off-campus sites to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • May require significant travel or work away from campus.
  • Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
  • Frequently required to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Frequently required to see for purposes of reading matter.
  • Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequently required to operate office and presentation equipment.
