The Lead Accountant is responsible for ensuring accurate daily accounting operations and supporting the financial health of the organization. This position plays a critical leadership role in managing financial reporting, month-end close processes, compliance, and internal controls while supporting operational efficiency across departments. The essential responsibilities include:
- Manage daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and fixed assets
- Prepare month-end and year-end close processes
- Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and inventory transactions
- Maintain accurate cost accounting records for manufacturing operations
- Assist CFO with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Assist CFO with accounting analysis and customer portals, and adherence to regulatory requirements and company policies
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and government contract requirements
- Support external audits, tax preparation, and financial reporting requirements
- Monitor cash flow and assist with financial planning initiatives
- Develop and improve accounting procedures and internal controls
- Collaborate with operations, purchasing, HR, and leadership teams to align financial processes to support business objectives
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship of accounting staff, fostering a positive work environment
- Assist with ERP system maintenance and process improvements
- Prepare management reports and financial metrics for executive leadership
- Must be highly organized, self-motivated, able to work independently as well as lead others, and exhibit strong problem-solving capabilities
- Must have excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
- Must have excellent communication and leadership abilities
- Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5 years previous experience in accounting required
- Manufacturing or government contract experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of accounting concepts, principles, and practices; particularly cost accounting and inventory management
- Knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Office programs; advanced Excel skills including pivot tables and financial modeling
