Controller – Nonprofit Accounting

Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Salary: $55,000–$75,000 annually

Are you an experienced nonprofit accounting professional ready to take the next step in your career? We are seeking a knowledgeable, hands-on Controller to lead accounting operations, strengthen financial processes, and provide the insight needed to support informed organizational decisions.

This is an important leadership position for someone who enjoys combining technical accounting expertise with strategic thinking. The Controller will oversee the organization’s day-to-day accounting functions while working closely with executive leadership to maintain financial stability, improve efficiency, and support the organization’s long-term mission and goals.

What You’ll Do
Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
Oversee the general ledger and month-end and year-end closing processes
Ensure financial statements are accurate, timely, and compliant
Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash flow
Develop and monitor annual budgets, forecasts, and financial projections
Analyze financial results and clearly communicate trends, risks, and opportunities
Monitor budget-to-actual performance and investigate significant variances
Establish, maintain, and strengthen internal financial controls
Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements
Maintain accurate documentation and audit-ready financial records
Monitor organizational liquidity and help optimize working capital
Identify opportunities to streamline accounting procedures and reduce manual work
Lead accounting-system upgrades, automation projects, and process improvements
Develop financial policies and procedures that promote consistency and accountability
Provide executive leadership with meaningful financial analysis and recommendations
Partner with department leaders to improve budgeting, planning, and financial decision-making
Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting team members
Establish clear performance expectations and support a high-performing, collaborative team
Maintain the highest standards of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics
What Success Looks Like

Success in this position includes:

Accurate and timely financial statements
A consistent and efficient monthly closing process
Clean audits with minimal findings or adjustments
Timely completion of tax and regulatory filings
Effective cash-flow and working-capital management
Well-managed budgets and clearly explained financial variances
Strong internal controls and dependable accounting procedures
Meaningful reductions in manual processes and reporting cycle times
A knowledgeable, accountable, and well-supported accounting team
Clear financial guidance that helps leadership make confident decisions
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field
At least seven years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience
Minimum of five years of nonprofit accounting experience
Minimum of three years of experience serving as a Controller in a nonprofit organization
Previous accounting leadership or supervisory experience
Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and audit preparation
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple financial priorities and meet critical deadlines
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Ability to explain complex financial information clearly to executives and nonfinancial stakeholders
High level of accuracy, discretion, integrity, and professional judgment
Preferred Qualification
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation
Compensation and Benefits

This position offers an annual salary of $55,000–$75,000, based on qualifications and experience.

Following successful completion of a 90-day orientation period, eligible employees may receive:

10 days of paid personal time off
48 hours of paid sick time
