The Staff Applications Engineer will provide technical leadership across multiple engineering teams, driving architecture decisions, complex initiatives, and engineering excellence. This role requires a balance of hands-on development, strategic planning, mentorship, and collaboration with technical and business stakeholders.
- Lead the design and delivery of complex, cross-team engineering initiatives with significant organizational impact.
- Develop architectural standards, best practices, and reference patterns adopted across engineering teams.
- Provide technical mentorship to senior engineers and influence engineering strategy and direction.
- Lead architecture reviews and technical design discussions, ensuring trade-offs, scalability considerations, and decisions are clearly documented.
- Translate strategic objectives into actionable engineering plans and execution roadmaps.
- Drive improvements in system reliability, scalability, performance, and operational excellence.
- Support production incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with engineering leaders, product teams, and business stakeholders to align technical solutions with organizational goals.
- Contribute to technical hiring processes, including interviews, candidate evaluation, and maintaining engineering quality standards.
- Write and review production code for high-impact components where technical expertise provides the greatest value.
- Promote strong engineering practices around code quality, documentation, testing, and operational discipline.
- Represent engineering in cross-functional planning and roadmap discussions.
- Create technical documentation including RFCs, architecture decisions, and design records to support long-term knowledge sharing.
The ideal candidate has extensive software engineering experience with a proven ability to lead technical initiatives, influence architecture decisions, and mentor engineering teams. Success in this role requires deep technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to operate effectively across strategy and execution.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
- Eight or more years of professional software engineering experience.
- Proven experience leading complex engineering initiatives across multiple teams.
- Deep expertise in at least one area such as distributed systems, cloud platforms, or large-scale data systems.
- Strong programming skills in one or more major backend languages.
- Advanced system design and architecture capabilities.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and providing technical leadership.
- Strong understanding of reliability engineering, observability, and operational excellence.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to influence engineering standards, practices, and culture.
- Experience with large-scale production systems is preferred.
- Background driving platform modernization initiatives is a plus.
- Experience with technical publications, open-source contributions, or industry presentations is advantageous.
- Familiarity with cost-aware engineering practices and FinOps concepts is preferred.
- Competitive annual salary range of $100,000–$150,000.
