Job Description
Overnight Pharmacy Technician
The Overnight Pharmacy Technician Level III will perform all job duties associated with Pharmacy Technician Level II (2260), as applicable. In addition, the Overnight Pharmacy Technician III, will be dedicated to the overnight shift, demonstrating knowledge in sterile compounding, performing environmental monitoring, and documenting quality control measures. This role focuses on sterile product preparation and maintaining the highest standards of aseptic technique while assisting the pharmacists with technical duties related to the preparation and dispensing of medications during overnight hours. The position requires knowledge of USP standards and cleanroom operations. This role is critical to ensuring continuity of pharmacy services, medication availability, and operational readiness for the day shift.
Key Responsibilities
Sterile Compounding
- Prepare sterile products including IV medications, piggybacks, and TPNs (if needed) according to USP 797 standards.
- Compound hazardous medications following USP 800/797 requirements
- Maintain certification in aseptic technique and hazardous drug handling and competency in use of closed system transfer devices (CSTD)
- Document all quality control measures related to sterile compounding
- Perform environmental monitoring tasks as assigned
- Prepare overnight and early-morning first-dose IV medications to ensure timely availability
Cleanroom Operations
- Execute cleaning and disinfection procedures in cleanrooms at all assigned locations
- Monitor cleanroom environmental conditions during overnight hours
- Maintain proper documentation of cleanroom activities
- Follow established procedures for sterile compounding
- Assist in environmental monitoring and quality control documentation
Supply Management
- Monitor IV supply inventory levels and ensure adequate stock for overnight and next-day operations
- Track and document supply usage
- Ensure proper storage of supplies according to manufacturer requirements
- Receive and process overnight deliveries as applicable
- No cardboard in pharmacy space receiving area only
Technical Support
- Assist pharmacists with technical and non-technical routine duties during overnight operations
- Prepare and dispense medication orders
- Stock and replenish automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis) for next-day readiness
- Support departmental quality improvement initiatives
- Ensure medication availability and operational readiness for day shift transition
- Assist Pharmacy IT with troubleshooting dispensing cabinet (Pyxis) failed storage or out of range temperatures.
Location Requirements
- Must be able to work at both inpatient facilities as needed
- May require travel between facilities during overnight hours
- Familiar with specific requirements and procedures at each location
COMPENSATION
This position is compensated on the Pharmacy Technician Level 3 pay scale plus a $3.00/hour over base.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrates the ability to perform the department-specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Potential exposure to hazards of the hospital environment, such as exposure to infectious disease, hazardous waste, and potential injury. Regular exposure to hazardous drugs requiring specialized PPE and safety protocols. Work in clean room environments with specific pressure, temperature, and humidity requirements, if applicable. Required to wear PPE including chemotherapy gowns, gloves, and respiratory protection when handling hazardous drugs, if applicable.
Requires the ability to stand and walk 90% of the time. Must be able to reach and lift up to 30 to 40 pounds. This position is dedicated to overnight shift coverage and may include weekends and holidays.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
This position reports to department leadership.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Business/college courses preferred. Advanced sterile compounding training preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Registration with the NJ Board of Pharmacy required upon hire or transfer. National Pharmacy Technician Certification required upon hire or transfer. Advanced IV certification preferred.
EXPERIENCE:Current Pharmacy Technician with minimum 6 months in position or 1 year hospital pharmacy experience with sterile compounding. Demonstrated knowledge in aseptic techniques and cleanroom operations. Strong organizational and mathematical skills. Proficient in pharmacy computer systems. Effective communication skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft applications preferred.
