The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.
Job Overview:
The Mental Health Screener provides care in the acute care setting within the scope of practice defined by the Screening Law and other regulatory standards. Assures safety in practice by maintaining a realization of their own individual level of knowledge and experience and assumes responsibility for advancing knowledge by communicating with and utilizing resource persons/programs available. The Mental Health Screener individualizes the plan of care to address a specific patient’s needs. Works in harmony with other staff members of interdisciplinary team, assisting the Patient Care Manager and others as needed, to achieve best service possible to patients. Responsible for supervising and directing the delegation of tasks to appropriate support personnel and for consistently setting and evaluating priorities. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc
Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree in related field, plus three years of prior experience in a psychiatric setting, one of which is in crisis setting or enrolled in a Master’s program with two years of prior experience in a psychiatric setting, one of which is in a crisis setting.
- Must possess the ability to work in stressful situations.
- Must possess and maintain a valid N.J. State Driver’s License. BLS required.
- It is preferred that individuals hired be eligible to obtain their Temporary Screening Certification Number upon hire and must obtain their permanent number with one (1) year.

Essential Functions:
- Answers phones, i.e., hotline, business line, in a professional and timely manner.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate clinical information effectively with the Screening psychiatrist / Child psychiatrist.
- Describes Screening process and updates progress of evaluation/interventions to patient/family.
- Documentation indicates collaboration with patient and/or family in the development of patient care planning and discharge. Gathering relevant collateral information.
- Evaluates effects of interventions throughout the patients stay and updates the plan of care as per hospital policy.
- Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports in a timely manner (prior to end of shift).
- Screening Assessment indicates determination of most appropriate services/ disposition according to patient’s clinical needs (consideration of least restrictive alternatives).
