The Director of Data Platform will lead the architecture, scalability, and reliability of a mission-critical data ecosystem supporting healthcare innovation and AI-powered insights. This role owns the full data lifecycle, from ingestion and orchestration to modeling, governance, and delivery across the organization. You will define the technical foundation that enables analytics, experimentation, financial reporting, and AI-driven decision-making. Working closely with data science, analytics, engineering, and business leaders, you will establish scalable standards and ensure trusted access to high-quality data. The role combines strategic architecture, technical leadership, and team development within a remote-first environment. You will have a direct impact on improving how organizations use data to drive better health outcomes and operational excellence.
The Director of Data Platform will provide technical vision and leadership for a modern data platform, ensuring reliability, scalability, security, and alignment with business priorities. This role requires a balance of architectural expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and people leadership to build durable data capabilities.
- Own the end-to-end data platform lifecycle, including pipeline orchestration, warehouse infrastructure, dbt architecture, data modeling, and delivery frameworks.
- Establish a Data-as-a-Product approach by defining standards for data quality, freshness, accessibility, observability, and reliability.
- Design and evolve scalable data architectures that support analytics, experimentation, AI initiatives, and business intelligence needs.
- Lead the development of foundational data models, semantic layers, and dimensional modeling strategies to create consistent and trusted data assets.
- Partner with Analytics and Data Science teams to define architectural standards and establish clear ownership boundaries between platform and analytics environments.
- Translate complex business requirements into technical roadmaps and scalable solutions through strategic discovery and collaboration.
- Mentor and grow a distributed data engineering team, promoting technical excellence, autonomy, and strong engineering practices.
- Drive architectural discipline through design reviews, technical documentation, RFCs, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with Finance, Product, Engineering, and cross-functional teams to prioritize platform investments and improve operational efficiency.
- Ensure critical data operations supporting revenue cycle management, member lifecycle systems, and business reporting remain reliable and resilient.
- Develop and maintain security and compliance practices for sensitive healthcare data, including access controls, data protection, de-identification, and audit readiness.
- Promote responsible AI adoption within engineering workflows by establishing governance standards and leveraging AI tools to improve productivity and documentation.
The ideal candidate is a strategic and hands-on technology leader with extensive experience building enterprise-scale data platforms, leading engineering teams, and operating in complex, regulated environments.
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data platforms, or related technical domains, with 4+ years leading and scaling engineering teams.
- Proven experience architecting modern cloud data platforms using technologies such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift.
- Strong expertise with orchestration frameworks including Dagster, Airflow, or similar technologies.
- Advanced proficiency with dbt, including large-scale project architecture, semantic layers, and BI integrations.
- Expert knowledge of dimensional modeling, star schemas, SQL, and Python-based data engineering practices.
- Demonstrated experience implementing Data Reliability Engineering practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and data quality frameworks.
- Strong understanding of analytics architecture, semantic modeling, and collaboration with data science teams.
- Experience influencing technical direction across cross-functional teams without direct authority.
- Proven ability to manage distributed engineering teams, including domestic and offshore contributors.
- Experience designing secure infrastructure for healthcare or other highly regulated data environments.
- Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements and experience managing sensitive datasets such as claims, eligibility, or clinical information.
- Experience using AI-enabled engineering tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or similar technologies to improve development workflows.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both engineering teams and executive stakeholders.
- Competitive annual salary range of $200,000 - $225,000.
