Director of Interoperability

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Interoperability based in the United States.

This executive leadership role offers the opportunity to shape the future of healthcare data exchange through innovative interoperability strategies.
The successful candidate will lead efforts to advance FHIR-based solutions, industry standards, and strategic partnerships that improve healthcare connectivity.
Working at the intersection of technology, healthcare policy, product strategy, and industry collaboration, this role will influence how organizations share and use health data.
The position requires a recognized interoperability expert who can translate complex standards into meaningful business and clinical outcomes.
This leader will represent the organization across national healthcare ecosystems while guiding internal teams toward scalable interoperability capabilities.
The role provides an opportunity to make a significant impact on provider workflows, patient care, and the evolution of digital healthcare infrastructure.

Accountabilities:

The Director of Interoperability will define and execute the organization’s healthcare interoperability vision while serving as a strategic leader within the broader health technology ecosystem. This role combines industry influence, technical expertise, partnership development, and team leadership to drive meaningful improvements in healthcare data exchange.

  • Define and lead a comprehensive interoperability strategy that supports business objectives, provider workflows, and improved patient outcomes.
  • Represent the organization externally with healthcare standards bodies, industry groups, vendors, customers, partners, and policy stakeholders.
  • Guide initiatives related to healthcare interoperability requirements, compliance frameworks, and evolving industry standards.
  • Translate complex interoperability standards, implementation guides, and regulatory requirements into actionable recommendations for product, engineering, partnership, and business teams.
  • Build and maintain relationships with leading healthcare interoperability organizations, standards communities, and industry initiatives.
  • Provide strategic guidance on FHIR, HL7, implementation guides, and healthcare data exchange opportunities.
  • Lead and develop a team of interoperability engineers responsible for implementing strategic initiatives and building scalable capabilities.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to identify opportunities where interoperability can create business value and enhance healthcare delivery.
  • Ensure internal teams understand key developments in the interoperability landscape and make informed strategic decisions.
  • Drive external engagement and establish the organization as an active contributor within the healthcare technology community.
  • Support the development of partnerships and collaborations that accelerate healthcare data accessibility and usability.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced healthcare interoperability leader with deep expertise in health data standards, industry initiatives, and technology strategy. They should combine technical knowledge, strategic thinking, and strong relationship-building skills to influence healthcare innovation at scale.

  • 10+ years of experience in US healthcare interoperability, healthcare standards, payer-provider data exchange, or health technology strategy.
  • Deep expertise in FHIR, HL7, implementation guides, and practical healthcare data exchange implementation.
  • Hands-on experience designing, implementing, or guiding FHIR-based APIs and interoperability solutions.
  • Meaningful participation in national interoperability initiatives such as the Da Vinci Project, Argonaut Project, US Core, CMS interoperability programs, or similar industry efforts.
  • Established relationships within the healthcare interoperability ecosystem and experience representing organizations externally.
  • Ability to translate technical standards into product strategies, business opportunities, and measurable value.
  • Experience collaborating with engineering, product, regulatory, partnership, and business teams in complex environments.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing and developing technical teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to balance long-term industry trends with practical implementation priorities.
  • Passion for improving healthcare through better data connectivity and digital transformation.
