Working Title:
Open Rank of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology
Position Summary:
The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine (SOM) Department of Surgery,
Division of Surgical Oncology is seeking a full-time academic Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeon. This position is being recruited at the Open Rank level; salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The UNM Division of Surgical Oncology currently consists of fellowship-trained surgical
oncologists, breast surgeons, colorectal surgeons, and hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeons who provide multidisciplinary care of patients with a full spectrum of malignancies. The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is a direct affiliate of the UNM School of Medicine and is the primary provider of tertiary and quaternary cancer care in New Mexico as well as portions of surrounding states, serving a population of over 3 million people. UNM serves as the state's primary referral center for both benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, and the biliary system. Surgeons in our group are actively engaged in cancer clinical trials and undergraduate as well as graduate medical education, including fellows in Complex General Surgical Oncology. The UNM Department of Surgery boasts a robust infrastructure of services and resources to help achieve academic goals, and leadership opportunities are available.
UNM serves a large, medically complex population and is a consultative resource for the State
of New Mexico and the Four Corners region of the Southwest. Outpatient oncology services are
provided through the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), the
only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. UNMCCC
is one of only 57 cancer centers in the nation to be designated by the NCI as a comprehensive
cancer center, the highest federal designation and rating for cancer centers. UNMCCC's 130
board-certified oncology specialty physicians provide comprehensive cancer care in every
specialty, adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and
radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals
(nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provided
cancer care for 65 percent of the adults and children in New Mexico affected by cancer.
The 123 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded over $38
million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects.
The department of surgery features a vibrant teaching environment, including a well-established residency program that graduates 7 chiefs a year, an accredited complex general oncology fellowship, and medical students.
The HPB Surgeon will work with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, diagnostic and interventional radiologists, nurse navigators, APPs, and other physicians involved in care of patients with benign and malignant HPB conditions, with the aim of providing state of the art high-quality care to patients, creating research opportunities, and providing an exceptional learning environment for medical trainees at all levels.
