Geology and Environmental Sciences - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26006248)

The University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in aquatic ecology and environmental policy. Our group combines fundamental studies of ecosystem disturbance and the role of habitat in structuring aquatic communities with applied work on how scientific data are used to drive evidence-based policy. In this role, you will contribute to ongoing research projects that include studying terrestrial/aquatic linkages in human-impacted watersheds, identifying restoration opportunities for cold-water fisheries, and using diatom sub-fossils to investigate disturbance impacts on historical river and lake ecosystems. In addition, you will be expected to participate in grant writing, prepare manuscripts for publication, present at conferences, ensure compliance with safety protocols, and assist with mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

Position Details:

The position is funded initially for one year and housed within the Department of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Pittsburgh working with Dr. Patrick Shirey and collaborators. The position may be extended pending funding and performance. Start date is as soon as practicable, preferably by November 1, 2026. Applications will be reviewed starting October 1. Successful conferral of your PhD is required prior to the start of your appointment.

Required: A PhD in Biological Sciences, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries, or an equivalent discipline

Preferred: Prior experience studying microbial communities or the microbiome of aquatic organisms (e.g., diatoms, bacteria), food web analysis, or terrestrial/aquatic linkages

Optional: Relevant technical skills including statistical analysis in R, GIS, field sampling, diatom taxonomy.
