Job Description
Position Title: Sterile Processing/Perioperative Technician
Reports to: ASC Nurse Manager
Department: Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Status: Full-time | Non-exempt
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operating Room Support
- Assist with operating room turnovers between cases, including cleaning and preparing rooms.
- Assist with positioning patients and opening of sterile supplies under the direction and supervision of the ASC Team Leader or Circulating Nurse.
- Assist with moving equipment, supplies, and furniture as needed between operating rooms and support areas.
- Assist with cleaning operating rooms between cases and at the beginning and end of the day.
- Assist with setting up room and opening sterile supplies.
- Restock operating rooms and perioperative areas with supplies, linens, medications-related supplies, and other items as directed.
- Retrieve supplies and equipment for surgical cases as requested by the surgical team.
- Identify and communicate supply or equipment needs to the appropriate team member.
Sterile Processing Support
- Assist the Sterile Processing team on an as-needed basis with cleaning, decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, and storage of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Assist with transporting contaminated and processed instruments according to established infection prevention and sterile processing workflows.
- Assist with inspection, assembly, packaging, labeling, and storage of instrument sets as trained.
- Maintain appropriate separation of clean and dirty workflow.
- Follow manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs), infection prevention practices, and ASC policies related to instrument processing.
- Complete required documentation and tracking related to assigned sterile processing duties.
- Communicate with the Sterile Processing Lead or leadership regarding damaged, missing, or improperly functioning instruments or equipment.
General Perioperative Support
- Assist with patient flow and other non-clinical tasks as directed by the nursing or leadership team.
- Assists with the transfer of patients throughout their surgical encounter.
- Maintains a professional and caring environment for patients
- Supports efforts to reduce patient anxiety by seeking assistance from nursing staff, and communicating to the anesthesia care team
- Assist with supply deliveries, stocking, inventory organization, and moving materials throughout the ASC.
- Help maintain appropriate inventory levels and notify leadership when supplies are running low.
- Assist with maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
- Respond to changing needs throughout the surgical day and assist in areas where additional support is needed.
- Supports environmental cleaning of Operating Rooms (shelves, drawers and anesthesia carts) and unit
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the safe and efficient operation of the ASC.
SCHEDULE:
- Monday – Thursday (6:30 AM – 4:30 PM)
- One day per month, the week extends through Friday (6:30 AM – 12:00 PM)
- Exact start and end times may vary based on departmental operations and team needs.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma required – undergraduate degree preferred.
- Current BLS certification, or completion of certification course within 6 months of date of hire.
- Certification (i.e., CASSPT or CSPDT) preferred, or successful completion of certification program/exam within 1 year of date of hire.
- Prior experience as a sterile processing technician preferred.
- Prior experience with pre-vacuum sterilization, gravity sterilization and associated chemical indicators preferred.
- Knowledge of applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards preferred.
- Knowledge of decontamination and sterilization processes, procedures, quality assurance preferred.
