Job Description
Legacy Places Intern
Base Pay: $23.00 / Hour
Employment Type: Temp NBE
Manage Others: No
DescriptionThe Conservation Fund’s Legacy Places program conserves and protects sites with important African American history. These heritage sites are powerful testaments to the struggles, triumphs, and cultural achievements that shape our collective national story. Yet too many of these places have been overlooked, underfunded, and are now at risk of loss or irreversible deterioration.
Our Legacy Places projects result in permanent conservation, secured through public ownership or protective easements that ensure these sites are never lost. The Conservation Fund serves as a bridge, moving quickly to acquire and stabilize properties, then transitioning them to long-term ownership and stewardship.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
The Legacy Places intern will research, compile, and visualize a list of potential projects sites and partners related to one of our preservation areas of focus: Underground Railroad sites and freedom corridors. By developing a roster of government and nonprofit partners working to conserve sites related to the Underground Railroad and freedom corridors, the intern will equip the Legacy Places program with valuable contacts for collaboration on visioning, revitalization, stewardship, and long-term ownership. Start and end dates are negotiable, with a total internship of 375 hours.
To perform this job successfully, you must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:
Compile and organize parcel information on sites of historic value that are not currently permanently protected. Create and share a visualization of potential sites (e.g., map, graphics). Develop a roster of government and nonprofit partners involved in conserving sites related to the Underground Railroad and freedom corridors.
WHAT WE NEED YOU TO HAVE
Experience conducting archival/historic research. Background in data organization and analysis. Experience in data visualization and storytelling. Interest in historic preservation and conservation. Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
